Today's fragrance adventures involve three new arrivals, one departed sample, and a first impression of Ralph Lauren Ralph's Club New York Parfum. First, a moment of silence for Parfums de Marly Percival, whose sample I finally finished this morning. RIP, Percival. You served honorably. I enjoyed every wearing, and you've earned a place on my possible future purchase, if the price is right list. Your main competition will be PDM Sedley, and that's not a bad position to be in. Fortunately, the fragrance gods were quick to replenish my decant box. Three new samples arrived today: - Ralph Lauren Ralph's Club New York Parfum - Prada Paradigme Le Parfum - YSL MYSLF L'Absolu I'm particularly interested in the Prada, given how much I've enjoyed that house's fragrances, and the YSL will give me another opportunity to explore the MYSLF line before deciding whether any of its offerings deserves a full bottle. But first up is Ralph's Club New York Parfum, which I'm wearing today. And my first impression is a very positive one. There's quite a bit going on here: black currant, lavender, cognac, cardamom, and a variety of woody notes. That's a lot of competing personalities in one bottle, but they work together surprisingly well. The fruity black currant, aromatic lavender, warm spices, and slightly boozy cognac create a rich, sophisticated composition, with the woods providing a solid foundation. It's complex without feeling cluttered, and I'm enjoying the way everything comes together. One thing seems immediately clear, though: this is a cooler-weather fragrance. There's a warmth and richness here that I suspect will be particularly appealing on a crisp autumn evening. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell North Carolina that it's October. We're back in the upper 80s today, so I'm very happy that I'll be spending the rest of the afternoon in my air-conditioned house. I'm not sure this is something I'd want to wear while wandering around outdoors in this heat.
