Match #4
Match #4 in my 40-fragrance tournament was a contrast in styles. It paired #28 seed Givenchy Gentleman Original against #37 seed Montblanc Explorer Platinum. Givenchy Gentleman Original (1974, 2024 created by Paul Léger) is an old-school classic built around honey, cinnamon, rose, patchouli, leather, oakmoss, and vetiver. It has a mature, confident character that feels timeless rather than dated. Montblanc Explorer Platinum (2023, created by Bruno Jovanovic) takes the Explorer line in a fresher direction with violet leaves, clary sage, and cedarwood. It's clean, modern, and easy to wear, but for me it never quite matches the appeal of the original Explorer. I like both fragrances, but this matchup had a clear winner. The Givenchy has more personality and gives me that classic, mature feeling I really enjoy. Explorer Platinum is pleasant, but I'd reach for the original Explorer every time. Givenchy Gentleman Original advances, while Montblanc Explorer Platinum drops into the loser's bracket.

Match #6
Match #6 in my 40-fragrance tournament was an easy decision. It paired #26 seed Givenchy Gentleman Society against #39 seed John Varvatos Star USA. John Varvatos Star USA (2011, created by Rodrigo Flores-Roux) is a bright, citrus-forward fragrance with ginger, cardamom, vetiver, and woods. I was given this bottle almost a decade ago, so it'll always remind me of South Florida. I'm actually down to the last few drops. It's pleasant and easy to wear, but ultimately a fairly simple fragrance. Givenchy Gentleman Society (2023, created by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, Maïa Lernout, and Fabrice Pellegrin) is my favorite in the Gentleman line. With notes of sage, narcissus, vetiver, vanilla, and cedarwood, it feels richer, smoother, and much more distinctive. It's not really a summer fragrance, but that didn't matter in this matchup. Gentleman Society simply offers more depth and keeps me interested throughout the day. It advances comfortably to the next round, while Star USA drops into the loser's bracket.
