For almost five years, I’ve been searching for the “perfect” fragrance. Every time I order something new, the anticipation builds and so does the dopamine, only to end up disappointed most of the time. I’ve told myself so many times, “The perfect fragrance doesn’t exist. This is a game you can’t win.” I had finally given up. But a few weeks ago, I found myself in a high-end fragrance store, with almost no desire to even try anything. The sales associate convinced me to give Ricordo a chance. It was an epiphany. Finally. This was it! It’s such a refined, polished, effortlessly appealing fragrance. Everyone seems to love it. The projection is excellent, and so is the longevity. It doesn’t overwhelm you or scream for attention, yet somehow gives you everything you could want. 10/10.

Today's SOTD is Parfums de Marly Haltane, one of several PDM samples currently sitting in my sample box. As I've come to expect from Parfums de Marly, performance certainly isn't a problem. Haltane has plenty of presence and staying power, with an opening of aromatic freshness and spice that gradually becomes warmer, darker, and woodier. The sticking point for me may be the oud. It's there underneath the fragrance from beginning to end, along with woods, leather, and a touch of sweetness. I don't dislike it, but oud isn't necessarily a note I naturally gravitate toward, and that keeps Haltane from immediately joining my favorites from the house. Of course, testing a fragrance like this when today's temperature was still in the high 80s probably isn't giving it the fairest audition. I have enough left in the sample for several more wears, and I'll revisit it as the weather finally gets cooler. Right now, though, my feeling is that Haltane faces some stiff competition from other PDM fragrances I've sampled. It's very good—but at Parfums de Marly prices, "very good" may not be enough when there are others from the house I'd buy first. Current status: Keep testing in cooler weather, but probably not at the top of my PDM purchase list.

Today's SOTD takes me back to the beginning of this fragrance hobby: Burberry Hero EDT. Hero was the fragrance that started this whole journey for me. I own the Parfum, but I've also kept samples of both the EDT and EDP around, so after roughly two years I've had plenty of opportunities to wear all three versions. Today's EDT is the freshest and brightest of the bunch. Bergamot gives it a crisp citrus opening, with juniper and black pepper adding some spice before the cedar really takes over. It's clean, woody, masculine, and very easy to wear—lighter and more versatile than my Parfum. The Parfum goes much darker and richer, with that wonderful wall of woods that initially made me fall for Hero. And I'm still very happy owning it. But here's the interesting part: after living with all three for a couple of years, I think the EDP may actually be my favorite. It seems to hit the sweet spot between the EDT's freshness and the Parfum's darker, heavier character. So there's no rush to change anything. I'll happily keep wearing my Parfum until the bottle is empty. But when that day eventually comes, I suspect I'll replace it with Burberry Hero EDP. Current status: The EDT is very good. The Parfum remains sentimental. But the EDP may ultimately be my Hero.

This one has a classic masculine aroma. It opens an aromatic, slightly sweet, green freshness (mentholated like,) along with a clean leather aroma. As it dries down the clean leathery accord intensifies while smoky and earthy nuances enrich the aroma blending smoothly with its freshness. While it isn’t a ground-breaking profile, it does have a refined and sophisticated feel, that will not offend anyone. Very easy to wear, cooler weather appropriate and suitable for any occasion. Projection is moderate with very good longevity.
