I wanted to follow up on my earlier post about Purpose 50, because today I finally tested it the way it’s meant to be worn. Last time I had doubts about the performance and projection, and I thought the issue might be the decant atomizer rather than the fragrance itself. I might be onto something with that. For this second wearing, I changed two key variables. First, I transferred the extrait into a fine-mist atomizer that’s specifically designed for essential oils and higher-viscosity materials. Second, I sprayed closer to the skin so the extrait could create that slight sheen that you’re supposed to see with higher oil concentrations. With those adjustments, the whole experience changed. This time I actually got a scent bubble. It’s still an extrait, so it stays closer to the skin, but it feels warm, steady, and present. The bubble moves with me in the air in a way it didn’t before. Up close the scent is denser and more resinous, but in the air the fragrance opens up and feels smoother and more diffused. The balm-like texture that people always talk about with Purpose 50 finally made sense to me today. At around the ten to twenty minute mark, I wasn’t getting that big citrus burst you find in the EDP version, which is normal. The extrait opens with warm spice and a resinous glow rather than bright bergamot. No suede yet at this stage, but the warmth, the spice, and the creamy texture were all much clearer and more coherent than the last time I wore it. And for the first time, Purpose 50 actually smelled the way reviewers describe it. Long story short, the atomizer absolutely matters with extraits. The distance of the spray matters too thanks @Henry Clay for the great post. After fixing both, the fragrance finally performed the way it was supposed to, and my whole impression of Purpose 50 improved. Anyone testing an extrait out of a weak decant sprayer should definitely keep this in mind. Curious if anyone else has had a similar experience where the atomizer completely changed their opinion of a fragrance.
