Adventures in Vietnam
Heading to Ho Chi Minh City tomorrow after been surrounded by flood waters for a couple of days, and without power for part of that time. Two weekends ahead of running a masters course in Creativity for Solvay, public workshop on Creativity, promoting World Creativity Day/Week next April, and discussions with a university about a 4-month engagement, which might include teaching facilitation skills. I have a busy 10 days coming up.

Love all your Linked In posts David. If only I was in Vietnam, I would definitely joined your workshop.

Corporate workshop to define venture opportunities
Hey all, I'm currently designing a workshop for a big corporate client. The ideal outcome is alignment over key areas they could explore for innovation tracks (read: corporate ventures). I have 1 day for this workshop to define the areas, and 2x 1/2 day in a bigger group to actually come up with venture ideas WITHIN the defined areas. I don't like to use canvases, but in this case I'm keen on trying a variation of the context canvas in order to grasp the context of the business (it's a big chemical company), converge by selecting key 'forces' they think are important in their context, and then brainwrite opportunity areas in the afternoon. I'm trying to keep it super simple, but since it's a complex company it might feel like it's a bit too simple... I'm wondering if anyone else did a similar exercise before?

Hi Dries, That's an interesting website - the one where you took the context canvas from. Thanks for sharing. It's an interesting challenge. I never done anything like that before, but the canvas can be as simple or as detailed - it depends on how you approach it. Simplicity is actually harder to achieve, especially when you are working with groups. So, I don't think it's a bad thing. What's going to make a difference is the structure you create to help your client find the answers their looking for in the most efficient and effective way. Are they trying to explore different product(s) for their existing client base? If this is mainly about exploring different ideas for their current client base I would try and adapt the Design Sprint to fit within the timeline and objectives required by them. Or do they want to penetrate different markets and acquire different client demographics? In this case I would adapt the Strategy Sprint to help them get to those answers. I hope this helps you 🙌
