So I’ve been looking for daily wear cool weather cheapies, and thought I would give Mercedes Select Night a try. This was a full bottle blind buy based solely on the glowing reviews I’ve read here and seen on YouTube, and one I was comfortable buying blind given the relatively low price (I paid $39 for it). Below is another one of my overly long reviews, but TLDR it’s very nice for the price, but I’m not really blown away and think there are better options.
After a bit of a false start (I ordered this on Amazon and for whatever reason I got delivered a bottle of Mercedes Ultimate - Amazon was quick to refund me, and I placed another order with a different seller), my bottle arrived today and I eagerly sprayed it on. All the posts and videos say that this smells like TF Noir Extreme, but I really don’t get that — they smell completely different to me.
My first impression is it’s a very nice scent profile, very soft warm and inviting, and not a clone of anything. The best way I would describe it is if you start with YSL La Nuit de l’Homme, turn down the citrus open, turn down the lavender, turn up the cardamom, add in some brightness from orange blossom (kind of similar to the brightness that Gucci guilty elixir gets from its orange blossom), and add a bunch of creaminess from sandalwood. I don’t get any vanilla, but as I wrote in other posts, I can’t really smell the vanilla in Mercedes Club Black either so it’s no surprise here and it doesn’t mean the vanilla isn’t here – it might just be my weird nose. I kind of had to spray it pretty heavily to really get a sense of this, and even half an hour into it I’m not getting a ton of scent - I have to lean in close to my arms to get a good whiff. But it is a pleasant warm spicy woody scent and it’s kind of doing the job that I wanted it to. I’ll have to wait and see how long it lasts but at this rate it’s going to be a skin scent after only a few hours (just like La nuit de l’homme!). For the record this doesn’t really smell like La nuit, which is a far superior scent IMHO, but with the adjustments I described this one is a little similar.
So… Would I recommend it? Well, I think it’s a great value for the price if you can get it around $35-$40 — it’s a nice heavy glass bottle with a cool gray tint and cool sloping cap that looks pretty elegant (although I’m not into the Mercedes badge on it). But I’m also thinking that these days $35-$40 can get you a fantastic middle eastern fragrance – I’m thinking of all the bangers in the Armaf Odyssey line and frankly the whole universe of Middle Eastern fragrance houses that I haven’t even tried yet that I keep seeing hyped on YouTube. So I guess what I’d say is if you’re just starting your collection, maybe focus somewhere else first but if you have a larger collection and you’re looking to round it out with a nice warm spicy creamy woody aromatic cheapie , then this is probably a fragrance that will get some wear if you buy it. I’m also thinking it could be a good layering scent and I’m curious to try a few combinations out.
If you have this one and have managed to read this far, let me know what you think about it!
