Strategy vs. Tactics and Brand vs. Marketing
Strategy vs. Tactics... In the online business and content creation world, I see endless discussions about tactics, but not much about strategy. e.g. So much info about sales funnels, VSLs, and youtube thumbnails (tactics), but little about crafting your mission, communicating and differentiating your positioning, and breaking down your audience to understand their behaviors/where they spend time/how they talk about their pain points to inform the tactics you choose (strategy). I see the need for it, but I'm wondering... are people here interested? Do you want to be more strategic with your brand and business or do you not care as long as you make money and grow subscribers? To illustrate what I mean, the graphic below outlines a standard marketing process. It's more detailed than most of us need, but it's representative of the steps a larger brand or marketing team takes. The supermajority of online biz content focuses on the last few steps (circled) with little coverage of the initial steps, which are foundational to making better choices down the line. Brand vs. Marketing... There's also lots of chatter about marketing but not brand building, even though marketing choices should be based on your brand strategy. People tend to use "brand" to reference a name, visual identity like logos, or the person/product, but those are just parts of the whole. Strategy is simply an approach or plan, so you can have a... - brand strategy (your personality, value, differentiators) - marketing strategy (your communication and messaging plan with platform choices) - execution strategy (the specific things you'll do for each platform) ... but they are different things. My brand/marketing experience comes from Fortune 500 brands, where millions to billions are invested into brand building and strategies before the tactics, so I'm curious if these ideas and this language also resonates with online entrepreneurs and content creators. If so... - What questions do you have?

@Riley Caldwell 100%. Strategy informs tactics, so the choices after product development become obvious once you do the upfront work. You may not need every step depending on what your business is, but strategy informs the product so you don't have to guess at what people want and what to offer. It also informs how to message bc you'll know the brand you want to convey (though that isn't explicitly noted here since it's assuming a company/brand already exist) as well as how your audience feels and talks about their problem. Basically, this is the heart of the "Spend 55 minutes defining the problem then 5 minutes solving it" quote. There are folks who just want to do their own thing and see what happens, but that's a project not a business 🙃

@Paul Masters are you differentiating btwn building a brand as a singular exercise (which i've seen offers for) vs. developing the strategy for your business and marketing? b/c what seems missing in a lot of these courses/discussions is the upfront deep dive on strategy that helps people learn how to figure out their mission, conduct audience research, distill insights, identify problems/opportunities, do competitive analysis, and translate all of those learnings into their brand, message, content, and marketing. most of these courses/masterminds/masterclasses have to check the box on helping with audience, positioning, offer, messaging, etc, but it's usually a small % compared to youtube best practices, ads, funnels, scripts, etc. Plus, they usually don't teach the principles and skills of HOW to do those things but rather one or maybe a few ways to do it. Outside of those ways, most people wouldn't know how else to do it. I haven't decided if I want to do anything with this. I used to do strategy consulting and got out of it for a reason, so i'm hesitant. but i am struck by the overindexing to one side without more balance towards the deeper work.
positioning: andrew's 2nd lesson from $500M mastermind
The 2nd lesson in the $500M mastermind video is essentially unique value proposition (UVP) in branding. a UVP often comes from a few key areas: 1. what you're doing 2. how you're doing it 3. why you're doing it 4. who's doing it (ie your style, personality, etc.) 5. how you make people feel when you do it yours can be something original in one or a mix of these. For context: i worked in brand strategy for 16 years at nike, espn, and the NBA and consulted startups and founders on this but stopped a few years ago and now focus on people's careers b/c it's more meaningful/interesting. i don't have a positioning/branding offer to sell you. PS: i suggested a meetup to anyone who wanted to work through their positioning, but an admin deleted it saying it was "against the community policies" even though there's a "MEETUP" category and these policies aren't posted anywhere. @Andrew Kirby... might be helpful if there are policies posted so people know what they are and don't spend effort on posts that will be deleted?

@Fedor Favorsky :) if we've tested and trained it properly, i do trust human instinct over most tech. separate but related, some students are claiming AI designed to root out cheating is getting it wrong about its AI-generated evaluation and falsely accusing people who actually created the content. all this to say, i value a world of humans being real people first who want to connect with other humans and am looking for those who value the same. @Blake La Grange's Kollege is the best skool i've seen for this, if you're interested!

@Jack Alderton glad it’s helpful! A competitive analysis is a valuable next step to further ideate on your unique value (by ID-ing where the gaps/opportunities are) as well as further refine by differentiating from competitors

Landing Page Feedback
Hey guys, I was wondering for anyone that had time to offer feedback on the landing page for my new digital product. It's targeted at younger males in the self development niche. I've spent a few months on it ensuring it effectively achieves the transformation I am marketing it as. great start. 2 thoughts... 1. mental mastery in service of ____? be your elite self so that you can ____? transforming one's life so that they can ___? i think you're sensing that the transformation isn't clear or solid enough. i wish more people cared about buying things that just made them better people, but most people will spend money when there's a tangible goal you're helping them achieve. e.g. a body change, a financial one (usually entrepreneurship and making money online), a dating/love/sex/relationship one, etc. that people feel deep pain points around. 2. too many people sell variations of this, so what's your unique value proposition (UVP) compared to ever other person who's trying to sell self development to young men? example of UVP... i'm not your target audience, but one thing that makes me eye roll about most people in this space, especially younger men trying to sell to other other men is the overemphasis on masculine vs feminine. the best real men i know are the ones who don't need to overstate their masculine energy AND balance it with their feminine. those 2 sides of us aren't sex/gender based... every single one of us has both energies to varying degrees. https://blog.mindvalley.com/masculine-feminine-energy/ something different would be someone talking about the merging of those 2 energies to be the ultimate "man"
