Calling Freelancers/Solopreneurs running Design Sprints
Hi there! I am on my journey to become a full time freelance facilitator and I decided to participate in the Design Sprint Masterclass to improve my toolkit. Until now my experience running Design Sprints has been in a company, where I always had other people in my team for support and to do various tasks. Also, in the Masterclass AJ&Smart talks a lot about the sprint from a company point of view, again with a lot of people and resources involved. This is why I would like to get some experience from other facilitators doing design sprints solo as freelancers, and what are your tips and challenges. If you have some input regarding the following (but not exclusively), I would be very grateful: 1. How do you deal with the preparation be it live or remotely, do you have any support, do you do everything alone, do you involve the client? For example for all the onboarding meetings, prep meetings, meeting organisation, prepping the room, snacks and drinks etc. 2. How do you deal with facilitating alone? In my experience it is hard to be attentive to every aspect of such a complex workshop, especially in some more demanding exercises. Do you enlist a co-facilitator from the client, do you have someone that can jump in when you need? Other ideas or tips? 3. How do you deal with all the work behind user recruiting and organising the user tests? Do you delegate to the client? Do you onboard someone to do it for you or do you handle everything at the same time? 4. Prototyping: Again, how do you juggle the work involved in this phase? Do you offer building the prototype yourself or do you give this to-do to the clients design team? And what if the client does not have a design team or resources to create the prototype themselves? 5. Finally, what are your deliverables at the end of the sprint and the timings between the end of the sprint and getting your results to the client? Hopefully this is not too much, looking forward to reading your experiences!

@Sofia Pinheiro Glad I could be of help. I know of great facilitators who run 4-day design sprints on their own -no help. Your main goal as a facilitator is to focus on guiding the team through the process and yes, offer as much help as you are capable of. As a designer myself I could take care designing the prototype for them, but it would be a drain for me and it just doesn't make sense for me to offer them a 4 day process as a 4 week thing and having to charge the client more for that. Adapt the Sprint to your situation, to what you know you are capable of and to your client needs. I just like to run my business as lean as possible.
How to price?
Hello everyone, I've been thinking a lot about what type of services and workshops I want to provide, and one thing I have many doubts about is pricing. I recently listened to Jonathan's podcast where he talks about setting a day rate. That sounds very reasonable, specially considering I've had experience selling by hour of work (for design work) and it was very tricky to forecast how much a project should eventually cost. However, we do know that a 2 hours workshop can take up to a few days of actual work, counting briefing, planing and reporting. Imagine a 1 day or multiple days workshop. How do you price that? By package? As in, for example, a 1 day workshop would be more or less 4 days of work, therefore it would cost (day rate * 4)?

Hi @Carolina Poll I reached out to @Kerri Price asking about her "Costing Out Your Facilitation Services" template which she kindly shared with me 🙏. It easily helped me figure out the kind of services I could offer and the numbers for each of them.

@Twan Moorlag Glad it helped!
BMC for Mapping
Hey, I often stumble with Mapping in a Design Sprint especially when the topic is strategy or Business Development. I am thinking of using the Business Model Canvas for the Mapping. Voting and Zoom in when needed is possible. Someone used it before or has other ideas? Thanks a lot and a great facilitor greeting.

Hi @Sebastian Sterz It's actually a tool suggested by Google for day 2 so I'll say go for it. I've only done it once and it worked with some issues. After that experience I would suggest to onboard the team to the BMC before the Sprint -if possible- if they are not used to working with it. I know of other facilitators that integrate it as a parallel process during the sprint like so: on day 3 they split the group in two teams, one will be working on the prototype while the other (smaller group) will be working on the value prop canvas and the BMC -just to have a record of it- after reviewing the results of the Sprint, both canvases get updated and then presented to stakeholders as a business case. If you are comfortable with the BMC it should be an easy integration.
Advertising a free workshop on Linkedin
Hi folks, i'm creating a 45 minute free online workshop that will be advertised on linkedin and was wondering what approach has worked in getting people to sign up, i'm looking to go small batch (<10 seats). Any stories or learnings would be amazing!

Yes! I was under the impression that because of how great the targeting for LinkedIn ads is, you would get more sign-ups, but no. I have heard similar experiences from other people. I was thinking about charging a small fee for some workshops but was under the impression that it may hurt attendance. However, after what you have said, I am more confident in doing so 😅 Thanks for your input, @David Newman. I appreciate it!
