Recently, I added weight to my flyes and started doing 57.5-lb flyes (plus the weight of the dumbell bar) with a very slow negative, lowering the weight over a count of twelve. When I reached the fifth rep, there was no muscular failure yet, but I felt a strange sensation that was clearly not normal. It felt as if a part of my chest had become hard and was no longer willing to stretch. Being aware of this, I stopped immediately and moved on to the next exercise.
For the next week and a half before my following chest workout, I stretched my pecs daily for a few minutes. Today, I did flyes again, and everything felt good.
This is a gentle reminder to stay aware of the sensations in your body. And beyond awareness, take action to fix any issue as soon as it appears. Bodybuilding carries risks, and if we want to continue doing it for the long term, we must approach it intelligently, patiently, and with caution.
