One day, a man fell into a well. He looked at his feet and saw another well at the bottom, and inside it was another man trapped. The latter looked up and asked the first man if he could help him climb up, but the first said there was nothing to help him climb. The second man also had another well beneath him, at the bottom of which was yet another man asking for help, looking up from the depths of his well. And beneath him, there was another man. And another. And another. And so on.
They all told the man below them that they had nothing to help him climb up. In reality, each of them had a rope, with which they could have pulled up the one below. If everyone had helped the one beneath them, little by little they all would have climbed up to the topmost well, and from there they could have escaped by making a human ladder.
That would have been the most logical solution for everyone; however, once adopted, none of them would have had anyone at their feet who was further from salvation. Therefore, no one decided to help anyone else, and they all spent the rest of their days in the shadows, in darkness.
That's a story I heard from Natalino Balasso, a comedian from Veneto, I hope it is well written
Have a good day😎
