Alive in Paris with Elevon
Sorry for disappearing, everyone. Work has been killing me, but I lived long enough to make it to vacation. I’m in Paris, and because of all the pickpocket warnings, I only brought my Elevon. Now I’m thinking I should have packed a few more watches. Rookie travel-watch mistake. So far, I’ve mostly been wearing Henleys and AG five-pockets or jeans because of the heat. Not exactly Paris runway, but survival has a dress code. I’m just glad I got here after the 44°C weather. That’s 111°F, which is less “vacation” and more “slow-roasting in a linen shirt.” I stopped into a Swatch store and checked out the Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch Moonphase and the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms collab. The Moonphase was way nicer than I expected. It did not feel plasticky. It felt solid, and the strap was actually comfortable. The Fifty Fathoms surprised me too. Very nice in person. A 90-hour power reserve on a 400 euro watch is kind of insane. Solid feel, nice strap, and oddly, sapphire on the back but not the front. So yes, Paris is dangerous. Not because of pickpockets. Because now I want more watches.

Sharp watch. Enjoy Paris
Gold, grey Double forward 3/2
This suit I hade made in 1995. It is the same design of Classic timeless menswear Ive worn since around 1980. In fact at Harold’s it was the only model we sold: 3 buttons with a 2 button roll, double forward pleats, cuffed trousers. It’s a design that basically harkens back at least 90 years. For accessories I chose a white with blue stripe CT shirt and a Brooks Brother’s goldish yellow tie, black captoes and a 1940’s Bulova watch. Regarding pleats- pleats roll in and out of the fashion world but have remained a staple of classic tiles style for a very long time. The forward pleat (see pic where a manufacturer mislabels reverse pleats provided) are my favorite. They are less common but when they armed nice and deep they have such a superior silhouette to the reverse pleats. They don’t look as bunched up especially when sitting. The secret for pleats to work is to never wear them too low on the waist. If I were having a new suit made I would keep with this timeless design. Very few stores still sell the 3/2 roll coat, J Press being one of the few. However for the double front pleat J Press sticks with the single. Ben Silver keeps the classic double. Ralph Lauren and a few manufacturers like Samuelsohn still has them as well.

@William Feldtmose sometimes a tailor can loosen the back and armholes. That suit isn’t quite that old (thank God couldn’t fit into those sizes 🙄) it’s from 95.
Solid Deux
Just to keep with the solid tie theme, since I discussed yesterday navy w green thought I would demonstrate. With the green accent in the microdot in the shirt it’s a bit more coordinated (less inspired) than harmonized but the two colors harmonize well irrespectively. • navy HSM blazer • CT microdot navy and green shirt • CT green grenadine silk tie • navy w green pocket square • steel blue trousers • Pantherella blue socks • shell cordovan Alden tassels (1982) • Weneger fooled watch w navy and green nato band

@Victor Ree that’s what makes the world go around. I’m kind of a big fan of a classic nato band with a field watch.

@Alex Kilpatrick lol. Well I wish you would share your opinion on These😎. In all seriousness. Agree with most of what you say. (Hard pass on the cowboy boots my friend -born in Texas grew up ranching as a boy so that clearly isn’t an appropriation for me). Not familiar with Peter Mannings jackets but any brand that misses the fact that the operable button should hit at the natural waist (about where a high rise trouser is- pretty close to navel height). Is simply a silhouette destroyer So I will trust your judgement my friend. The one thing that frustrates me about Peter Manning is the fact they are missing a huge market. With a 32” sleeve I can’t find a sweater that fits. But I don’t understand why they don’t have more classic designs like cable v necks basic crew necks etc. Now regarding Shaw collars. I like them in the right circumstances. Trying to remember if I have ever owned one. Don’t recall but sold a lot. My son has had a couple and likes them very much. Also.regarding performance fabrics. I have a few Orvis blends that work and some martial arts gear. But the RL golf wear “performance fabrics and other polos are the most unflattering shirts I have ever worn. Have given all but two away.

@Mike Chambers the issue is the horrible design of coats that has occurred in no small part to the fashion designer Tom Ford. The skirt of the coat is too short, the operable button is too high, and the fit is too tight. To answer your question directly: yes a man who is less than average height (5’9” in The US) can get by with a slight my shorter jacket. I am about 67 3/4” tall. My size has reduced from a 44 regular down to a 42 regular. As @Alex Kilpatrick has spoken about before-standard off the rack sizes vary in coat length. A 44r is longer than a 42r. I bought an off the rack 42r the other day and the middle button is slightly too high simply because they are making them higher. A 42 short would have been absurdly high. Far too many clerks improperly sell shorts to guys who shouldn’t be wearing shorts, moreover with the weird fashion today a regular would fit better. It’s very simple. Skirt of jacket should cover buttocks, be at least as long as a man’s crotch at its lowest point and the middle button should fit at the man’s natural waist (hands at side -bend side to side-where one hinges is the natural waist-pant heights vary)
