June 2025 Social Circle Game Report I: 10 Years Since My Friend Killed Himself
2 June - 8 June 2025
The start of the week had a dark anniversary... 10 years since my friend left home and wandered into the woods. 10 years since his mom found his body hanging from a tree with his belt around his neck. 10 years since everything changed. My friend was a famous game developer before he died, and he had depression all his life. Months after his death, I teamed up with his family to raise awareness for depression, becoming involved in the charity founded in memory of him. My job initially was to re-release his games, being a game developer myself for many years. So for the past 10 years I have managed his legacy, making his games available once again for the millions of people who enjoyed them before. Several years ago, I had a vision as I stared at the ceiling to open up some thinking time. I had a dream that we could travel across Canada to raise money for the sanctuary my friend's mom wanted to have for the charity. Land with a lake for people to enjoy nature, camping, kayaking and much more. She talked about it for years, but we never really ACTUALLY did anything other than make some low effort GoFundMe pages and hope for the best. But this dream I had opened up an incredible strategy instantly. It's a lot to put into words, but I can share details with those who are interested. To mark the 10 year anniversary of my friend's death, I hosted a server on a game I made in 2016, which effectively works as a museum about him and his creations. People can submit fan art, tributes, etc. Hundreds of people joined, which comes as no surprise because we get hundreds of people in servers every month for our monthly hangouts. But ultimately, to me it's an incredible thing knowing that a friend's legacy has lasted beyond 10 years, and has in some ways grown stronger and reached a new generation. His body may not be living, but his story and creations live on. This is what I think about often.
On another day this week, my wife's friend was having a birthday celebration. There were 7 girls in total, and just me. One guy showed up much later, so the ratio was incredible. The venue was filled with women. It was actually pretty insane. It was about 100 women, and 5 guys in the entire place (Including me). Venues like this are quite rare.
On yet another day, 7 girls and me, plus 3 kids (One being mine) for those of us who are parents, had a dinner at a meat (Pollos a la brasa) restaurant. If you're wondering why I'm even writing about such things... Family is a part of social circle game. It, in fact, is probably the original form of social circle game from many thousands of years ago. It's something I have been thinking about recently.
Aside from that, I have won a gift from YouTube. Details will come next week.
