Interesting Facts about Hotel California by Eagles
The more I was listening to the song, the more I was questioning the meaning behind it. So, I watched a couple of videos about the meaning of the lyrics, which is quiet interesting. And, I would like to share a couples of interesting facts I learnt about the song with you. To begin with, in words of Glenn Frey, one of the co-writters and co-founders of the band, they like to describe it as, "...achieved perfect ambiguity", means that every metaphore in every sentence is just as they planned to be. There is a wide range of interpretations, however based on a couple of interviews with the band they say that the lyrics was never about an actual hotel, but instead it was a reflection and metaphore of the high-life style of living in LA (Excessive consumption of substances and problematic situations) and the music industry they were currently expiriencing. Secondly, they incorporate the description of the five senses through the story they´re telling, just as if they where describing an emotional tale and want us to feel we are protagonist of the song: On a dark desert highway, *cool wind in my hair* *Warm smell of colitas* rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, *I saw a shimmering light* My head grew heavy and sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night ... There she stood in the doorway, *I heard the mission bell* And I was thinking to myself, this could be heaven or this could be hell And so on... In addition to the lyrics in late 1977, subscribers of the highly reputable "Guitarist" magazine voted Hotel California as the best guitar solo of all time. Finally, the lesson I stay with after reading and watching videos of the meaning of the lyrics is that whoever reaches the heights of "supposed success" soon get to realize that in many ways, it is a nightmare and that is what hotel california is all about "the underbelly of the fantasy", the truth of the matter being that all that glitters is not gold. Thank you for reading. Enjoy the song...
