I love chicken wings! I think I posted a picture the last time I made them too. What typically makes chicken wings unhealthy is cooking them in a deep fryer. There are so many other options. You can bake them in the oven, air fry them, or cook them on your grill or smoker. These chicken wings were brined for 30-40 minutes in a simple water and salt solution (1 part salt to 4 parts water). This step is important because it keeps your wings nice and juicy. Then I cooked them on the smoker for 2 hours at 250 degrees, and then cranked it up to 375 for the last 15 minutes to crisp up the skin. For the sauce, I just used hot sauce and about a tablespoon of butter. You can even eliminate the butter if you want to.
The final step to make sure they’re a healthier version is to serve them with some fresh veggies (I usually do cucumbers, carrots, and celery), but then what do you dip them in? Here’s a quick recipe for a blue cheese dressing made without mayonnaise:
1 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
5 oz crumbled blue cheese
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon ground garlic
Salt & Pepper to taste
If you’re baking your chicken wings in the oven, cook them at 400° for about 45 minutes, flipping them halfway through. They cook best if you put them on a wire rack on top of a cookie sheet to allow the air to circulate.
If you are using an air fryer, cook them at 400° for 20 to 25 minutes. You should shake the basket or flip them halfway through.
*For all cooking methods, you wanna make sure you cook poultry to 165° internal temperature.
Let me know if you try this at home!
Eat well.
