Open rate track from 2nd sequence?

If the first email in a campaign is plain text (so open tracking isn’t possible), can we still track opens from a follow-up email in the same thread?

My understanding: once the first email lands in the primary inbox, follow-ups should also land there.

Has anyone tested open tracking from followup sequence?
