Paper gasket vs Gasket Maker

For Rear Main Housing, and Front Gear Box (not the outer cover), is anyone using permatex or RTV, instead of the paper gaskets? I think the seal would be better and hold up longer, but also seems tricky to pull off the right way. Thoughts?
