Guerlain - Bergamot Fantastico Extrait 11
Today I’m wearing Bergamote Fantastico Extrait 11 from Guerlain. I’ve always appreciated fragrances that take something familiar and show you just how interesting it can become when it’s handled exceptionally well. Bergamot is certainly nothing unusual in perfumery, but here Guerlain really puts it under a magnifying glass. It opens with that beautiful bright, almost sparkling citrus character you expect from bergamot, but there’s much more underneath it. As it settles, I get a wonderful combination of woods, fresh spice, aromatics and a touch of amber, which gives the fragrance considerably more depth and substance than the opening might suggest. What I particularly enjoy is the contrast. It feels fresh without being light, elegant without being overly formal, and sophisticated without trying too hard. There’s still a bit of that unmistakable Guerlain refinement running through it. For me, this is exactly the sort of fragrance that makes an otherwise ordinary Thursday morning just a little more intentional. 😎

Fragrance: My Definition of Classic, Timeless and Dated!!!
I’ve been thinking about the difference between a fragrance being timeless and simply being a classic, because I don’t think they are always the same thing. To me, a timeless fragrance can still smell completely believable today even if it was released decades ago. A dated fragrance can still be excellent, important, and worth owning, but you immediately know what era it came from. Some fragrances I would personally put in the timeless category are: Dior Eau Sauvage Chanel Pour Monsieur Guerlain Vetiver Creed Green Irish Tweed Terre d’Hermès EDT Acqua di Giò EDT Chanel Platinum Égoïste Dior Fahrenheit Guerlain Habit Rouge Bleu de Chanel These fragrances may show some signs of their age, but the basic structures still work. Citrus, vetiver, woods, herbs, clean musks, refined aromatics, and well-balanced chypre or fougère structures can age very well when they are done right. Then you have fragrances like CK Eternity for Men EDT, Drakkar Noir, Polo Green, Azzaro Pour Homme, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, Obsession for Men, Joop! Homme, Polo Sport, CK Escape and Curve that are much more tied to the period they came from. That doesn’t mean they are bad fragrances. Some of them are legendary. They just smell dated by today’s standards. Kouros is probably one of the best examples for me personally. I always owned Kouros, and I still own a bottle today. I have a lot of history with that fragrance and I’ll probably always appreciate it, but I can also admit that Kouros is VERY dated. That huge animalic, musky, floral, old-school masculine character immediately tells you that you’re smelling something from another era. Same thing with Eternity EDT. I understand why people call it a classic, because it absolutely is one, but I wouldn’t personally call it timeless. That sharp green, lavender, geranium and herbal fougère style screams late ’80s/early ’90s to me. And that’s really the distinction. Classic doesn’t automatically mean timeless. A fragrance can be historically important, iconic, nostalgic, and still smell dated.
