SOTD: Spicebomb Night Vision Edt by Viktor & Rolf 09/07/2026
It hurts me too say this but, honestly the most disappointing addition to my Spicebomb collection. I picked the edt first because everyone said it was more versatile, though I did also add the edp. It’s billed as part of the iconic line, but it’s a much lighter, fresh‑green scent with only a faint dusting of the spice, but bomb it definitely is not. The name Night Vision set me up expecting something richer, darker, and more intense, so that was a real letdown. Even the signature peppery DNA that makes Spicebomb what it is feels watered down here, not gone entirely, but muted and far removed from the punch I love. Released in 2019 by perfumers Nathalie Lorson and Pierre Negrin, it feels like it’s aimed squarely at people who find the original Spicebomb too loud or overpowering, which is fine, but it loses too much of its identity in the process. It opens with a bright burst of green freshness: bergamot, green mandarin, grapefruit, and crisp green apple, backed only by a soft hint of green cardamom. That’s the biggest split from the original. There’s zero explosive black pepper hit here, just clean, zesty green notes that feel like they belong in a completely different line. As it settles, it shifts into aromatic herbs: clary sage, geranium, rosemary, and lavandin keep it light and airy, never building any real heat. The drydown finally adds some warmth with roasted almond, tonka, patchouli, cedar, soft woods, and musk, but it’s too little, too late. You have to wonder what they were thinking: we already had Fresh and Infrared EDTs that got discontinued, presumably because sales were weak. The original Spicebomb was an EDT and it was an absolute beast, so why intentionally make the newer ones so much weaker? From a performance standpoint this is easily the bottom of the barrel for Viktor & Rolf. The juice itself isn’t terrible on its own, it’s just not a proper Spicebomb, and it fades way too fast. I get maybe 4 hours on skin, with very modest projection for the first hour before it shrinks right down to a faint skin scent. Night Vision and Infrared EDPs are far more robust, which makes sense, later releases like Dark Leather only came as an edp, same with the brand new Metal Musk. I’m obsessed with this line, it’s my absolute number one, but they really dropped the ball here.

SOTD: MYSLF L'Absolu by Yves Saint Laurent 08/07/2026
This is a brand‑new spicy woody release from 2025 created by perfumer Christophe Raynaud. He is the same guy behind JPG’s Scandal line. It’s the third entry in the MYSLF family, following the original 2023 EDP and 2024’s Le Parfum, and it’s clearly built as a heavier, richer, more spiced take on the formula. The bottle stays the same shape but gets a high‑gloss polished finish that looks sharp but is an absolute smudge magnet, fair warning there. Testing it, I noticed it leaves a distinct oily film on the back of my hand, so you can tell straight away there’s a much higher concentration of materials here than your standard release. The opening is where it stands apart most from the earlier versions: bright, punchy ginger and cardamom take the lead, bringing fresh warmth and a lively kick that never feels harsh, balanced by just enough bergamot to keep that clean citrus thread the original is known for. In the heart, the signature orange blossom, which is sourced from YSL’s Ourika Gardens in Morocco, if you believe the marketing, is cranked right up. It has that crisp, almost soapy or “fresh laundry” feel, though I’d argue that’s down to the Ambrofix deep in the base rather than the flower itself. It settles into a smooth, suave patchouli that’s not earthy or dirty, just warm woody depth, with a soft hint of lavandin I pick up too that ties everything together neatly. It’s easily my favourite YSL I’ve tried so far, though full disclosure, this is only my third bottle from them. Performance is outstanding: 8 full hours easily on skin, projecting strongly at arm’s length for the first three before softening into a noticeable, long‑lasting skin scent. But you pay for it: a 100ml bottle runs €155 at my local store. They did throw in a nice leather YSL wash bag and 7.5ml travel splash as part of the launch offer, which is a lovely extra, but let’s be honest, we’re not here for free bags, we’re here for the juice, and this one delivers exactly what it promises. My Rating: 8/10
