There’s a point where collecting stops being primarily about fragrance appreciation and becomes completion-driven collecting. It’s the mindset of: “I already have the one I love, but now I need the Intense, Parfum, Elixir, Limited Edition, Night Edition, Summer Edition…” The actual scent can become secondary. The urge to own the complete line becomes the motivation. A few signs of this collector mindset: Completion over preference: “I don’t love it, but I need the set.” Flanker propensity every new release creates an urge to acquire it. Fear of an incomplete line: owning 6/7 somehow feels incomplete. Bottle-family appeal: the visual continuity of a collection becomes part of the attraction. Acquisition becomes the reward: sometimes the excitement of obtaining the bottle exceeds the excitement of wearing it. Redundancy gets rationalized: “They’re different enough” even when the actual wearing experience is very similar. The house becomes the object: you’re no longer collecting fragrances; you’re collecting the brand’s universe. And honestly, this isn’t necessarily bad. It’s just a different type of collector. Someone may buy a flanker because they genuinely enjoy it; another buys it because the OG without the flanker feels incomplete. With a very large collection, that distinction becomes particularly interesting: Are you collecting scents, or are you collecting completeness?

@Renato Carotti is in the middle of moving his shelves and organizing his massive collection. I thought it might be a great time for everyone to update their collection photos. Plus I'd love to see what everyone has and how y'all are organizing, too. I loosely organize by House, then by function, then by bottle shape. Pic 1 is my Imaginary Authors / Aaron Terence Hughes / Dua shelf along with my 10mL travel / decants. Most of the travelers are City Rhythms and Dua. The decants are Initio, and some miscellaneous other. Pic 2 is my Lattafa / Rectangle bottle shelf. The discovery kit is Ellis Brooklyn that I picked up like two years ago and never got around to, so now I'm actively going through it. Pic 3 is my odd shapes shelf along with a bunch of samples from Andrea Maack. It's a little dark, but those round bottles are Commodity Vetiver and Paper+. Pic 4 is my discovery set shelves. The little white ones are from Pearla Nera, the TPG Scent Club kits, and the big black box is the TPG Mystery Box samples that I'm still going through. Pic 5 is my Hermes / MMR / Cylinder bottle shelf. These and Pic 1 tend to be my most used and favorite fragrances out of my whole collection. Pics 6-9 are my closet shelves. It's what I call my "archives". A lot of the date night / winter night fragrances are hanging out here, but most of the others are fragrances that I don't wear very often. I will sometimes rotate them with the main shelves in pics 1-5, but a lot of them are destined for culling. The JPGs, Ralph Lauren Earth, Jon Varvatos (to some extent), and Mugler stuff are exceptions. I just don't have room for them on the main shelves Pic 10 is my actively wearing shelf in my bathroom. Nothing stays here for more than a week except the samples. I'm prioritizing the samples, because I have so many (a litte over 250), and I really want to use up as many of them as I can. I set a goal of using up 100 before the end of the year, and I'm sitting at around 45 that I've used up so far this year. I burned through about a dozen in July alone and have retired 6 so far in August.
