Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya! I came across a quote from Master Perfumer Richard Herpin that really got me thinking: clone fragrances are a mere “caricature” of the real perfume. That’s a pretty sharp way to put it, because a caricature isn’t a total fake. You can still tell who it’s supposed to be, but the features are exaggerated, simplified, and pushed harder than the original. And honestly, that does describe a lot of clones. They often grab the loudest parts first: the smokiness, the sweetness, the citrus, the woods, the overall vibe and give you a version that resembles the original without always carrying the same nuance, texture, balance, or polish. It’s like they copy the outline, but miss some of the finer brushstrokes that gave the original its full character! Now before anybody thinks Joe A. is coming for clones, let me be clear: I’m not anti-clone at all. They absolutely have their place. They make scent profiles more accessible, help folks explore without body-slamming their wallets, and sometimes they do a pretty solid job for the money. But I do think the “caricature” idea explains why clones can be both appreciated and criticized at the same time. So maybe that’s the real question: are you looking for the full portrait, or are you good with the sketch? What say you, guys?
