Terre d'Hermès EDT
Some fragrances make an immediate impression that doesn’t really change.Terre d'Hermès was one of those for me. The first time I smelled it was in a gift shop on the way to Mahogany Bay in the Caribbean. One spray was all it took. What stood out then is still what stands out now: bright citrus, earthy mineral tones, and dry woods coming together in a way that feels refined, natural, and very controlled. In heat and humidity it behaves exactly how it seems to have been designed, transparent, close to the skin, and best when reapplied rather than expected to project for hours. It’s not a “beast” fragrance, and it was never meant to be. To me, that’s part of what makes it work. The perfumer designed it to stay elegant and airy rather than dominate a room. That’s exactly how it responds. It’s one of the fragrances I confidently call a masterpiece.

I love the flint in this.
SOTD: London by Burberry 10/06/2026
London was launched back in 2006, created by perfumer Antoine Maisondieu, a scent that's firmly rooted in the woody‑spicy‑aromatic family. It's an enjoyable fragrance, said to have been designed to capture the character of the city itself: It's warm, structured & slightly smoky. It came out at a time when “woody spicy” was king, and unlike many modern releases that chase trends, this one has a timeless qruality. Nothing flashy, nothing sweet, just solid, well‑built fragrance DNA. It’s not a clone, not a cheap copy, and not trying to be anything other than exactly what it is: a proper, grown‑up, designer fragrance that was made to last, and honestly, it’s aged better than most from that era. With a bright opening, the zesty bergamot cuts straight into sharp, spicy cinnamon & black pepper. The lavender adds a clean, herbal edge, stops it from being a spice bomb. At its core, cedarwood takes centre stage, the dry, pencil‑shavings mix well with saffron to bring that rich, golden, slightly metallic/spiced warmth. Mimosa adds soft, powdery, floral depth without being sweet. At its base, a dry tobacco leaf, mixes with an earthy patchouli. Then a sweet‑resinous Opoponax gives that warm, balsamicb vibe which is paired with a clean musk to anchor it. Performance here is ok, nothing beastly though. I get about 4 hours on skin, it projects well for the first 60 to 90m. Let it get on your clothes and it will linger all day long. It's still a descent scent,, considering it's age. It is 100% autumn/winter, night‑time, smart‑casual to formal office, dinners, dates, weddings, or anytime you want to smell sharp, trustworthy, and well‑dressed. If you’re into rich, dry, woody scents with real depth and zero gimmicks, this is exactly the kind of thing you’ll appreciate. My Rating 6.5/10 Scent 2 Longevity 2 Sillage 1.5 Y/N 1

I really thought I’d love this. When I tested it, it was just “okay”.
SOTD: One Million Night Elixir by Rabanne 07/06/2026
A recent addition to my collection, One Million Night Elixir is the latest addition to the iconic One Million line. Whilst the actual perfumer details would be a bit obscure right now it would seem to be a combined effort between the og creator Christophe Raynaud & Master perfumerQuentin Bisch. This one sits firmly in the woody-spicy-amber category, designed explicitly as a darker, richer, and more intense evolution compared to the original or even the previous Privé and Elixir versions. It’s not trying to be fresh, light, or subtle; this is a full‑on night scent. It's thick, warm, sweet & heavy. It’s clearly built to compete with heavy hitters like Spicebomb Extreme, Tobacco Vanille, or JPG Le Beau Le Parfum, and right out of the bottle, you can tell it’s meant to be the loudest, most luxurious version of One Million yet. Right at the start, this opens bright, zesty & aromatic. You get that juicy, sweet‑sharp citrus kick from mandarin, balanced by the drier, more tart, peely edge of bitter orange. Then the cardamom cuts through it: warm, spicy, aromatic and a tiny bit resinous. It’s a lively, vibrant opening, fresh enough to catch your attention, but with enough spice to tell you it’s going to warm up fast. No weak, watery citrus here; it’s punchy & well‑defined. Once the top fades after 10–15 minutes, the scent really shifts into its character. Amber takes centre stage: rich, warm, golden, resinous & soft, giving it that smooth, luxurious, sweet base layer. Then patchouli comes in, not the heavy, earthy, dirty kind, but a cleaner, deeper, woody/earthy version that adds depth, weight and a touch of dark, spicy complexity. The rum accord is the star here, it smells like dark, aged rum: boozy, sweet, slightly caramelised, warm & ntoxicating. It’s rich, smooth & has that distinct boozy sweetness without smelling like alcohol. As it dries down and settles on skin, this is what stays with you for hours. First up, that maple syrup accord, it’s thick, rich, warm, golden sweetness. Then cinnamon hits: warm, spicy, slightly woody, giving it that classic winter‑spice kick. And the surprise here is the lavandin: it’s not fresh or soapy like usual lavender; it’s deeper, herbaceous, slightly camphorous and woody, and it cuts right through all that heavy sweetness and spice to ground it. The end result is a warm, sweet‑spicy, boozy‑syrupy dry‑down that’s rich, with just enough herbal depth to keep it interesting.

Jo Malone Veggies Collection
My wife and I took a trip to Trafford yesterday, and we picked up a 3x9ml discovery set of their new releases: The Veggies collection. Here’s my quick thoughts on the three new scents: Carrot Blossom: The most subtle of the three. Fresh and a touch earthy, with a delicate floral core. Evocative but not as direct as, say, the rose in Red Roses. Fresh, but in a rich way. Scarlet Beetroot: Interesting almost tangy opener. Again, fresh, but not floral. Definite gourmand depth, but a touch zesty and tasty. The most gourmand, but also the best of the three. Velvety Buttetnut: Warm and embracing. Silky and nutty throughout, and the least fresh of the bunch. If Carrot feels like a flower and Beetroot feels like a salad, Butternut feels like a soup. Interesting for sure. Overall: A delightful edition to the Jo Malone range. Not as forward as other JM scents (like the garden florals or the juicy citrus), but beautiful nonetheless. Performance wise, they’re what you’d expect from a JM Cologne. These feel like a late summer trio that’ll segue nicely into more autumnal offerings from other houses. My fave? Beetroot. Wife’s fave? Beetroot. Shop Assistant’s fave? Beetroot. Give them a look if you can.

@Jeff Beason We both liked them all, they were a little different.
SOTD - Bohemian Lime by Goldfield & Banks
As my wife and I went to the cinema this evening, I wanted something bright and inoffensive on my skin, in case the place was packed. I needn’t have worried, there was much space between the patrons. Still happy with my choice. Citrus tang that mellows into an earthy vetiver smoothness, very realistic juicy lime at the top end being the standout for me. Longevity wasn’t stellar, and projection was minimal once the top faded, but for the circumstance it was a great choice. Would cinema in this again, no notes. The film? The Devil Wears Prada 2. Much better than we were expecting from a sequel. Plenty of stylish clothing to gawk at, and a Drakkar Noir joke that made both me and my wife laugh. Recommended!

@Erick Tai lovely, glad it works for you! I’m happy enough with my 8ml in samples, don’t think I need a bottle.
