SOTD: Galatea by Maison Alhambra 04/06/2026
I already own quite a few excellent fragrances from Maison Alhambra, and I’ve always been impressed by how well they stand up to more expensive brands. They have great alternatives to favorites like PDM’s Hercules and Perseus, which I’ve enjoyed a lot. Lately, I’ve been completely fixated on leather-based scents, so I decided to pick up Galatea, knowing it’s often mentioned as a substitute for Godolphin. Honestly, I was never a huge fan of Godolphin myself, but Galatea is on another level entirely and far better in my opinion. I also love the story behind the name: in Greek myth, Pygmalion was a sculptor who carved Galatea out of ivory, fell deeply in love with his own creation, and prayed to Aphrodite to bring her to life. She granted his wish, and Galatea became real fitting for a scent that feels like a crafted masterpiece. Released in 2022, this is an oriental fragrance built around a rich, distinct leather core that immediately caught my attention. When you first spray it, the opening is really complex and vibrant. You get a lively mix of fruits, mate, fresh green notes, cypress, and thyme. It comes across as quite sharp, fruity, and spicy all at once, which I found really invigorating. As it settles down after about twenty minutes, the heart reveals beautiful florals: rose, orris, and jasmine come through, adding a soft sweetness and a touch of elegance. But don’t worry, the flowers never take over or make it feel too soft or feminine, they simply play a supporting role, letting the real star of the show shine through: that wonderful leather. The dry down is honestly where Galatea becomes something special for me. The leather note is rich and has just a hint of that lovely animalic edge, perfectly balanced by creamy vanilla and warm amber. Underneath it all, cedar and vetiver give it an earthy, woody base, and I can definitely feel the Iso E Super doing its work here, adding that smooth, depthful texture and incredible staying power that I’ve come to love in many great perfumes.
