Nuit d'Issey
This is one that seems common, but got a good chunk of criticism when it released. It was followed up by many annual flankers that seem to have eclipsed it.
When I initially tried this is was a sample, and the incense really grabbed my attention. It smelled like those sweet sticks of dragons breath out of head shops. And when I got the bottle (#3 of the collection!) I was overwhelmed by how strong it was. The whole perfume has a strong synthetic edge to it that gave me headaches so it fell to the side. Going back to it now, I can barely even register the incense. What I get is a thick pepper, patchouli, and spiced ebonywood that plants this in the dark fougere category. The comparison is rare but it smells like a woody Sauvage Edt to me. And as I descend through the truly tenebrous ichors, I find this just smells fresher every time I pull it out.
Glancing at the notes, I'm surprised that tonka is anywhere in this. The initial citrus is not a natural fruit smell. The neglected original Nuit sits around $35 still while the fancy arctic star whatever flankers soar up to $75. If you're happy around the Mont Blanc Legends and Invictuses of the designer world then it might be worth your time to revisit this Miyake before it disappears.
