I just listened to the Blueprint videos and Jim’s story stuck with me—especially his comment about not being the “hyper kid.” That stereotype is exactly why so many people were missed.
A lot of us either learned to mask early or were naturally quiet, internal processors. We weren’t disruptive, so it was assumed we just didn’t want to apply ourselves. But the “H” in ADHD isn’t about outward behavior—it’s about what’s happening in the brain. For many of us, the exhaustion comes from constant mental overactivity - a hyper brain 😊 - not physical restlessness.
That’s also why meds like Ritalin don’t create some dramatic, super-focused version of ourselves. When ADHD is actually present, it often just quiets the noise—making it easier to think clearly, stay with a task, and follow through. When someone that doesn’t have ADHD uses (or abuses) such meds, they’re more likely to experience and notice dramatic effects.
All of this has made me realize how important it is (at least for me) to push back on the misconceptions. ADHD isn’t just being distracted or joking “squirrel!” any more than everyday habits equal OCD. It’s more nuanced—and a lot less visible—than people think.
