What you wish your in-person coach would cover...
So, we're always looking/searching for those little "golden nuggets" to improve our game play experience beyond practices. But have we ever stopped to think about what kinds of things we wish our program coaches actually covered or taught during practice? As a coach myself, I'm so used to looking at and acting upon the "bigger picture" that its easy to overlook some of the smaller details that can be very evident with 1-on-1 or some sort of smaller and more direct instruction. So for the coaches such as myself, what is something each of you wish you had learned before reaching out beyond your program?

Sacramento State Run Get-Off Drill
Love this one for run-game violence. Explosive first step and hands together. 👇 Here’s how to run it. Set agility bags 1 yard apart. Line your guys up on each bag. From the stance: Explode out. Hands from the ground to the man ASAP. Reset to the next. Multiple reps. Both sides. Then progress it. Same get-off. Same violence. Now strike the pop-up bag. Feet running on contact. Great pad level. This drill teaches: Fast run get-off Violent hands No wasted steps ⬇️ What usually breaks down on your run get-offs? 👉 500+ drills and workouts, all organized in the Train Like a Pro classroom.

I initially said feet stop, but the more I thought about it, its really more so an issue of pad level popping up... because if your pad level is low, you're gonna keep driving to keep from falling. When your pad level is too high, you'll ofetllten find yourself stretching to expell that last little bit of power you got.

You know, when I was watching Hubbard on his rep, I noticed two things. 1) It's not a great view, but I feel like the shin on his up-foot could have been better, and 2) he really stepped out to "catch" his offensvie linemen. I feel like had Hubbard stepped forward to attack on the left side instead of receiving on the right side, he could have easily used the momentum of the o-linemen to throw him away. Is that a fair assessment?

@Nicholas Dheilly ahhhh.... now that I think about it... I can see what you're getting at....
Pass Coverage
I’m planning on playing college ball and a-lot of the schools i’ve visited drop their ends back in coverage. Throughout high school i never went into coverage and couldn’t tell you the first thing about it, where do i start?

Yeah. Thanks Coach. I was just about to hit him up for an abbreviated version of your response. I think you hit the biggest concern for him and most others going into a similar situation.... I dare say the chances of you covering anything in man-coverage is 1% or less. Allow me to add this too... Typically when the DE drops into coverage its in some way, shape, or form a type of "Robber" call. This means you as the DE will drop at that 45 % angle to replace the OLB, a.k.a. overhang safety, who just went in guns-a-blazing! This will often force theQB to panic and get rid of the ball in a hurry. Ideally, a quick hook/curl route... a hitch even... a good DE staying low can go undetected. The results? We like to call that a pick-6! Worst case scenario, a skill guy catches a ball out in the flats.... that's an easy bullseye!

You know... something else I just thought about... I feel like at the high school level, if you happen to see a DE drop into pass coverage, that may be enough of a distraction to allow the other 2-3 defensive linemen to have that split second extra in time to force more pressure if not actually get that sack. Just saying!
