Do you have a Thought Partner?
Many facilitators are also solopreneurs, which means that when it comes to creating workshops they are working on their own. But, it would be nice to have someone to bounce ideas off or to co-create with. We may ask a friend for thoughts and comments (or post on here), but we don't go into depth due to time constraints. A friend of mine had this problem for a Creative Workshop she was going to run and reached out to me. After some discussion we came to the realization that what she was looking for was a Thought Partner. Take a look at the video we made about this, and then add your comments or thoughts below. And if you would like to explore hiring me as a Thought Partner, reach out 😀

UPDATED LINK: Let's give an international virtual meet-up ANOTHER try. For those interested in connecting, learning from others, and talking about our own work, please use this link to indicate interest and availability. I've tried to find a time that's convenient for everyone (actually ChatGPT did it). Here's the DOODLE POLL to indicate your interest and availability: https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/b8BWjwWe Once we have a date (or two), I'll send out a video link. Looking forward to meeting everyone!
Facilitating change in education
Hi everyone! Are there any other education/pedagogy specialists here? I'm working with a team of educators and an amazing school in the US to redefine their pedagogy and approach to teaching that reflects the needs of today's students. I am looking to take my work to other schools and perhaps expand our team of experts. I look forward to hearing from you.

@Anna Shildrick Is there a next meeting? I wasn't able to make the first meeting, but I'd love to connect with education-focused facilitators.
Did I screw up?
Just finished leading a Lightning Decision Jam in my non-profit org. It was with some leaders in the Fund Development department. We started with a how might we question we came to in a previous workshop, "How might we add value to leadership?" Their main problem is that the leadership doesn't seem to value their opinions and makes decisions that affect their teams without consulting with them. The four gentlemen in the workshop have been facing this problem for years and years. There are some bright spots for sure, but overall the executive leadership likely needs some paradigm shifts. There were a few crucial moments in the workshop where I'm wondering if I let them talk too much. I could sense the need they felt to get clearer on a problem so they could better use their votes. When we were moving to the How Might We question I could tell they weren't quite ready to land that plane and needed more discussion as they searched for the root causes. Anyway, I allowed more talking because it felt complex and crucial to get them aligned to a proposed solution experiment. Here are the questions bouncing around in my head: - Are LDJ's not as useful for complex and challenging problems? - Should I have reiterated "trust the process" more and emphasized the best insights won't come from our discussions, but our experiments with solutions? - Was the talking good for this process? I notice I feel deflated somewhat and I think it's related to the fact that I'm just unsure how to think about this workshop. I welcome any feedback. No matter what, I'm going to learn from this experience and sharpen my skills.

The more talk the better - but so is more writing. I've come to learn the value of asking good questions as a facilitator and asking participants to write for a few minutes before they speak. And then repeat the process with later questions and when they are rolling with ideas verbally - things not written (or drawn) are not remembered, nor are they deeply thought out. But don't be discouraged. It sounds like this group could use another LDJ as this one seemed to awaken their desire to figure out the problem but also realized it's quite big. So LDJ again. . . and again until they can own the process and get to some solutions.
London in July?
I'm heading to London in late July and would love to connect with folks facilitating in the city or proximate area - especially, but not exclusively, in the not-for-profit org or education world. Please let me know if we can connect in the coming weeks to plan forward. Thanks!

Facilitation for kids (9-11 yrs old)
The school of my kids offers the opportunity to organise workshops for the kids and I would like to participate in this. I'm thinking of subjects and exercises that are suitable for kids in the age of 9-11 years old. One of my ideas is to organise a light version of the design sprint or where they can think of a new toy or game, but maybe this is too conceptual. Has any one experience with this?

Love this - we've been doing sprints with high school kids with some cool results. I know we could modify for younger students - the initial activity is particularly accessible and hands on. Let's talk!

@Joost van den Meerakker We've run several design thinking "classes" - a series of sessions intended to teach students design thinking and apply this thinking through a sprint targeted on improving their school. What we've learned is that it's very important - and impactful - if students can touch and feel the power of a sprint on day one. We've used exercises like building a marshmallow structure or "build your customer a backback" to make the design think real to them and have a tangible example from which to apply to less concrete ideas.
