Tech Thursday - Gear Ratios
We had some discussions about gear ratios the other day and I wanted to know what you guys are running? If you can briefly mention whether it’s a road/gravel/mtb, type of terrain, if you are racing and so on. Just to give a little bit of context. Eg. If somebody lives on the flats and races crits then a 1 x road groupset makes perfect sense for them but I don’t want somebody living in the mountains to think that they should copy your setup 😆 For me I built a road bike up with Shimano 52 x 36 front chainring but using a 10 x 36 sram casette (works fine but wouldn’t race it). Living in girona so I’ve a big gear for the fast downhills but a pretty easy one for long, hard climbs too. If I was racing I’d want a 54 front chainring but not racing these days. Also thinking of selling my road bike and buying a gravel frame with a 46 chainring and getting the sram Xplr 10x46 and swap in and out a set of road and gravel wheels. Road would be my priority so it would be a slightly bigger gear for the gravel riding but I think it would be fine. Was thinking of getting a set of 47-50mm tyres for the gravel wheels. Again I’m not currently racing so for the time being it could be a fine option. A slow, durable tyre would be fine - couldn’t be bothered with a set of fast tyres that punctures all the time and using tonnes of plugs. Those new recyclable vittoria tyres are cool but no idea what they are like - would rather go for vittorias to support EF with caoimhe but open to suggestions on all this 🙏 I’d like to start creating more posts where everybody can jump in and add their thoughts and opinions. Would be cool to see more people getting involved in these discussions!

For road I’m running sram 50/37 front chainring with a 10-33 in the back. For gravel I’m on the new sram 1x13sp with a 46t chainring up front and a 10-46 in the back. And for my crit bike I’m running a sram 1x set up with a 50t chainring up front and a 10-28 in the back.

Second day back on the back on the bike post vacation. Legs did not want to cooperate.
Introduction
Hello everyone, I am Kevin, based around Austin/Leander. I am mostly a road rider (some gravel and mountain bike) and I am in that happily-obsessive phase of trying to get stronger in a systematic way: lots of structured work, plenty of Zone 2, and trying to do the boring fundamentals well (sleep, consistency, nutrition). I am also a scientist by day (and some nights) (biochem/cancer drug discovery, with a bit of an obsession with protein synthesis - i.e. how it is regulated), so I tend to home in on 'what’s the mechanism?'- whether that’s training adaptations, fatigue, or why one setup feels calm in crosswinds and another doesn't. I am genuinely looking forward to learning from the group. Below is my Aethos. I love this bike for its simplicity and its so much fun on the hills. 44T/10-36, 6 Kg.as seen.

Welcome Kevin! I'm based in Houston, but work in Austin on a regular basis. Would love to link up next time I'm in town!
Race Scheduling
For the coaches - how would y'all like us to inform you of races that we'd like to do so that y'all can bake that into the training plans? I know we've got the weekly availability spreadsheet, but do you also want us to make a note in training peaks or somewhere else?
Unbound Gravel Logistics & General Chat Thread
@Marc Wildeman has created an amazing spreadsheet for those attending & supporting Unbound Gravel. This is a fantastic asset to share details on lodgings, available vehicles and the number of people that potentially can pass out food/bottles/high fives on the day :-) If you are attending Unbound have a look, add your details and lets all support each other for this epic ride! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DjvroKZSnejzK4hfBfRJimbSXBRfgJNsw06wXrnbyRQ/edit?usp=sharing Also, lets use this thread to put any questions around the event into.

I’m booked at the Fairfield in emporia. Just got off the phone with them and they booked me straightaway.

@Blair Corey @Marc Wildeman would be fine with either of the times y’all are currently considering.
