Working on the fear of falling
Never been confident doing handstands facing walls but as I practice falling from handstands they feel a bit better. I can do a cartwheel but think there is a mental block of doing one out of a handstand! Here I was also trying to get my feet off the wall by focussing on my hands and hips rather than my legs.

Nice work. Face to wall handstands are terrifying. This is impressive.
⚠️ Why Doing “More” Is Slowing Down Your Strength, Skills, and Mobility
TL;DR • You can’t train strength, skills, and freedom of movement at full intensity at the same time • One goal should lead each workout — everything else supports it • Animal movements are amazing, but where you place them matters • There are 3 simple ways to add animal movements without sacrificing strength or skills A question that comes up a lot is whether things like animal movements can replace traditional strength work (for example: push-ups vs lizard walks). Short answer: it depends on your goal. Every movement style has pros and cons. The mistake most people make isn’t choosing the “wrong” exercises — it’s trying to do everything at once in the same workout. The big principle In every session, one goal leads. Everything else stays in the background. If you try to train: - Max strength - Skills - Mobility - Freedom of movement …all at full intensity in the same workout, progress slows down fast. Strength days If the goal is strength, the goal is to get stronger. That means: - Isolating the movement as much as possible - Accepting that calisthenics already involves a lot of muscles - Not turning the session into a “do everything” workout Animal movements are great, but they don’t replace focused strength work when strength is the main goal. Skills: strength vs technique Not all skills are the same. Some are strength skills (planche, front lever): • You’re failing because you’re not strong enough yet Some are technique skills (handstands): • It’s more about nervous system, balance, and mind-body connection This matters because technique skills can be practiced more often, while strength skills need smarter placement alongside strength training. Mobility & freedom of movement If your main goal is mobility and freedom of movement, then yes — animal movements can replace a lot of traditional work. Think of training like sliders that add up to 10: - Strength - Skills - Freedom of movement You might run: - 8/10 movement - 1/10 strength - 1/10 skills

Thank you, a very apt post. I am definitely trying to progress everything at the same time. Might be worthwhile taking some time to reflect on what I want to achieve first.
🤔 Should I Learn Skills Before Strength… or Strength Before Skills?
This question comes up all the time And the honest answer is not one or the other. It is both, just in different roles. Here is the simple truth You do not need to be “strong enough first” to start learning skills. And you also cannot ignore strength and expect skills to magically appear. Skills and strength grow together, but they grow differently. What skills actually need Most skills are about: • Body awareness • Balance • Positioning • Coordination • Time under tension in specific shapes A handstand is not about how many push-ups you can do. It is about holding a straight line on straight arms. That means you can (and should) start practicing skills early Even if you feel “weak”. What strength actually does Strength: • Makes skills easier to hold • Makes progressions safer • Expands what skills are possible You build strength through: • Push-ups, pull-ups, squats • Progressions that challenge you • Rest and recovery Strength is the engine. Skills are the steering wheel. The mistake most people make They wait. “I’ll start handstands when I’m stronger.” “I’ll try muscle-ups once I can do more pull-ups.” That delay is what slows everything down. The better approach ✔ Practice skills often, at low intensity ✔ Train strength hard, but fewer days ✔ Let technique improve daily ✔ Let strength improve weekly Think: Skill practice = learning the language Strength training = building the voice Both matter. The real goal Do not choose skills vs strength Learn how to train both at the same time without burning out. 💬 What skill are you currently avoiding because you think you are “not strong enough yet”?

I would say that I have been guilty of avoiding practicing ring muscle ups as I felt I didn’t even have the strength to complete a controlled negative.

@Brandon Beauchesne-Hebert currently I am finding the transition to be the challenge. Rather than smoothly working through it, there seems to be a point where control is lost and the motion speeds up until I catch myself again and control the remainder of the motion.

Hi All, My name is Aaron and I’m from Australia. I started training Calisthenics once a week a couple of months ago, and am aiming to ramp up the frequency in the New Year. I am currently working on handstands, which will hopefully progress to handstand pushups at some point in the future.
