Enneagram Type Eight: The Three Subtypes
Every Type Eight seeks strength, autonomy, and the freedom to protect what matters. But the three instincts shape how that power is expressed.
🛡️ Self-Preservation Eight – Satisfactory Survival
Focuses on creating independence through resources, resilience, and self-reliance. These Eights are practical, grounded, and determined to ensure that they—and those they care about—have what they need.
🤝 Social Eight – Solidarity
Focuses on using strength in service of the group. These Eights naturally step into leadership, protect the vulnerable, and fight for justice, often becoming champions for others.
❤️ One-to-One Eight – Possession
Focuses on intensity, passion, and total engagement in relationships. These Eights seek deep, powerful connections and often bring tremendous vitality, loyalty, and presence to the people they love.
The instinct doesn't change the core Type Eight pattern, it changes where power is directed and how protection is expressed. Understanding your subtype can reveal the unique strategy your personality has developed and help you discover that true strength is not just the ability to control life—but the capacity to remain open to it.
Reflection:
Which of these three expressions feels most familiar to you or to a Type Eight in your life?
