You are not Lazy!
A statement of a friend of mine is a poignant observation that many of us can relate to. It's common to feel guilty for not being more productive, but the reality is that we have finite mental, physical, and emotional energy to expend each day. In times when we're struggling to get by, it's important to be compassionate towards ourselves and acknowledge that making it through the day can be a significant accomplishment.
As humans, we possess a remarkable capacity for adaptation and resilience. However, one thing that we cannot tolerate is a lack of agency. The freedom to make choices is an essential component of our existence, and feeling trapped or without options can lead to feelings of depression and isolation. In moments when we're expending all our energy to merely survive, it's important to remember that life persists, and we must continue to move forward, even if it seems like we're just treading water.
The philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre famously asserted, "Freedom is what we do with what is done to us." Although we may not always have control over the circumstances of our lives, we do possess the power to choose how we respond to them. When we're feeling stuck or powerless, it can be useful to remember that even the smallest choices can make a difference. Whether it's deciding to take a brief walk outdoors, reaching out to a friend for support, or simply taking a few deep breaths, each decision we make has the potential to propel us forward and help us to continue moving ahead.
