Treasure of the Sierra Madre
"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948) is a story in the Joseph Conrad tradition, using adventure not as an end in itself but as a test of its characters. It involves moral disagreements between a wise old man and a paranoid middle-aged man, with a young man forced to choose sides.
That's the quick and dirty version. But sometimes when you know a thing you can see it everywhere.
My thinking:
A 1948 classic film of Two down and out people went to Mexico thinking That all they had to do was show up and people Would give them money. (Lesson one: if it was that easy everyone would do it.) They ended up on the Bum (as they say back then.)Bagging Of Americans for money and staying in a flop house where you hear others who didn’t make, and excuses as to why. All but one old man. Who was telling everyone his truth as to why he was there. They leave and end up heading right back where they started, ON THE BUM.
Again they seek out the old man and make a deal with him. To go looking for gold. The old man agrees. And yet again what they thought they thought they knew about finding gold. But again the reality of it were two different things. When they found, it they didn’t even know that they had and were ready to forget about it.
This is us as voice actors, We got in thinking that everyone would be knocking themselves over to work with us. And for some they end up on the Bum and leave without even trying. Then you hear Earl ( A not so old man talking about the realities of the business) How easy it is to get started. But to make it you have to put in the work. We make a deal with him and off we go. One day after following him and some of us are just one day from throwing in the towel. Earl tells us we’re here. And starts to show us what he really knows, How his years of experiences will help you dig out that gold faster then if you hadn't followed him. The old man never made them any promises. But he knew what he knew and for a fee (seed money. That he kicked in too.) He would show them how to knock years off their journey. That’s what Earl is offering. And really other coaches are more than likely calling him crazy for what he’s doing. But Let one day a bunch of us start getting more work than others. And watch the same people knock each other down wanting to talk with Earl. And maybe for one, two or three people, they become a coach (Mini Earl.) too.
That’s my Treasure of the Sierra Madre = Voice Over business Thinking.
