Do you say 'thank you" and "please" to ChatGPT?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated on X that processing various "please" and "thank you" messages costs the company an extra "tens of millions $$.
Although polite communication with a chatbot may seem pointless, some AI architects consider it beneficial. I.e. Microsoft design manager Curtis Beavers says that proper etiquette "helps generate more useful results".
A survey conducted at the end of 2024 found that 67% of respondents in the U.S. reported being polite when interacting with chatbots. Of that group, 55% said they did so “because it’s the right thing to do,” and 12% – to appease the algorithm in case of an AI uprising.
User politeness may already be creating very real environmental consequences.
I personally use all kind of words - from polite to opposite speaking to AI
Curious - what about you?
I'm polite to AI because it reflects who I am
I don't give a damn - that's just a machine
I’m polite to AI because—who knows—one day it might remember
