Lessons learned in Japan
Recently I went to Japan and South Korea . I met a few moa and pcpb people and met a few Japanese nightlife professionals. Initially I wanted to throw a shoot however I quickly learned photographers in Tokyo have some much abundance they don’t have time to shoot .
1.Men need boundaries
I met a middle aged black american woman with 4 kids no interest in Japanese just drinking henny every 2 mins however she was flown out by a man who she never dated or in any type of romantic relationship . As men it is important to have boundaries. She was also my wingwoman for the night even if she was a little older than our group .
2.Collaborations are key
Special thanks to Jairmo ,leontranoc and Ben Davis . You all gave insights and helped me achieve a successful trip.
3. Optimal way to grow a social circle
Japan has a long history of cold approach in the form of nampa . I have seen a few approaches and compared to when gaijin approach those interactions are shorter. Tokyo there are a lot of foreign women here for various reasons. Befriending a few English teachers gave me insight on places to go. In Japan line has more weight than Instagram . However it is ideal to request both .Japanese people can conservative but in shibuya Friday and Saturday night they are the ones going crazy . I went to Harlem and ibex. Both clubs that played black music. I felt like I was back in the states . Vizier in shibuya was more top 40 however people there were more open to meeting others.
4. Work Life Balance
If I live in Tokyo it would be as it, content creator online business trader enough to do weekly shoots and language exchanges . Work life balance in Japan can be intense.
5. Learning Japanese is Essential
English is lingua franca only among foreigners not natives . I had longer interactions when I spoke Japanese . It was stressful sure especially no English menu places . However it was great challenging myself to be more immersed in the culture and language.
6.General Travel tips.
If you don’t have T-Mobile invest in an esim. Those who drink will find most alcohol is dirt cheap at conbinis. People say nyc is the city that never sleeps. However Tokyo has several department stores and 24 hour restaurants that are affordable and perfect to bring your crew after a long night.
7. Overall thoughts on Tokyo as a whole. Tokyo as a long term hub would require me to focus full term on building a local social circle plus going to any expat or tourist meetup. Anyone traveling should be respectful to culture , language and customs. There are already too many influencers here making Americans look bad.
