Is traveling cheaper than staying at home? Or is it not?
We had a comment exchange here with another guy, he thought I was more successful than him (for sure not) because I travel a lot (digital nomad).
The reality is, travelling can be cheaper than staying at home (as long as you work remotely), depending on how you travel.
I started travelling on a tight budget (1000$ a month, do not recommend that, but 13 years ago that was all I could afford).
I used to go to Thailand (mostly Chiang Mai, the islands in the south were a bit more expensive):
  • single room for the night 10-15$
  • lunch/dinner 2-4$
  • breakfast 2-3$
  • 1 hour massage 4-5$
Nowadays, Thailand is a bit more expensive, add a 30% to these prices. Bangkok is more expensive than this. In January I had a top tier apartment in one of the best areas of the city for 1300$ a month (from Airbnb).
South America is not as cheap. But I like the girls better, plus I speak the language and the timezone is just perfect for my online business.
A meal (an actual nice meal, not a shitty hamburger whil standing in the street) costs you around 10$ (add 30% in brasil). Never had breakfast out, But I think scrambled eggs and juice you'll be at around 5$ (+30% in brasil).
Apartment really depends. I usually stay in average places. By average I mean a nice place (not too fancy, but not an old broken shithole) in the nicer part of the city (that is for security, in south america you have to know in which neighbourhood to stay and if you can safely walk home or get a cab back at night), usually not a studio but something bigger and a nice desk where to work.
A place like this would cost
1000-1500 in colombia, peru, brasil (in brasil airbnb are shittier than the rest of latam, and more expensive) and ecuador (would skip it, girls than to be not as hot, the country right now is pretty dangerous, even though it's a bit better than when I was there).
800-1300$ in paraguay, bolivia and argentina
Uruguay, I was there but it's too expensive and the city too quiet in therm of girl, would not go back. add 30% compared to brasil.
chile, venezuela and the 3 guayanas, never been, but would love to go, so no clue.
Of course, these are prices for a month, you can check by yourself on airbnb, for a month you usually get a discount, sometimes up to 40%
Keep in mind, that this is not the fancy vacation in tulum, where you spend a lot in a week just because you are in the fanciest resort on the beach and getting wasted every night.
I was in playa del carmen for 6 month during covid. While someone was spending few thousand a week in tulum, I was in a very nice apartment at 650$ a month right in the center of playa del carmen.
You're not the backpackers going in a hostel and sharing the room with other 20 dudes.
Also keep in mind that in those countries you spend more in rent for a month than the average girl makes in 4 months, so you will have status even tough it's not the mansion with the best city view.
Of course you can go cheaper, getting a single room in shared apartment (I don't like that) or go fancier with villas and mansions (I saw a penthouse with private pool in rio de janeiro for 26k a month).
Hope this helped someone.
