The Overview Effect

This 7minute, 2022 video was shared by a group of local psychotherapists while the recent Artemis II mission was in flight. I'm sharing it here as a beautiful reminder of the 'overview effect' and as a piece of science communication that helps me resolve some of my conflict about space exploration - because the 'overview effect' helps us see that we are all 'of earth' - we are planetary.

I could imagine this video being used in a facilitation, supported by inner development-focused coaching questions, including using the 'Dolly Zoom' film technique mentioned in the video.

About the film: "Astronaut @RonGaran experienced this so-called “overview effect” when he first saw Earth from space. When he looked out on the planet, he saw an iridescent biosphere teeming with life, all protected by a remarkably thin atmosphere. What he did not see was the thing that society often gives top priority: the economy. For Garan, seeing Earth from space revealed problems like global warming, deforestation, and biodiversity loss are not disconnected. They are the symptoms of an underlying flaw in how we perceive ourselves as humans: We fail to realize that we are a planetary species."
