In a hang out last week we briefly touched on the topic of artificial intelligence and there where many different perspectives in the room. I want to share this one here. It may be easy to dismiss it as being far away in Latin America however I believe the same pattern recognition issues are a constant. Check it out and share your thoughts.
UNDP Paper on* Gender Bias in AI Risks and Opportunities* for Latin America and the Caribbean
September, 2025
This working paper examines the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), with a special focus on gender bias. Grounded in the region’s socio-economic realities and the situation of women, it also considers the AI economy, regulatory debates, and the technical systems that increasingly shape decisions affecting people’s lives.
The paper highlights that although AI promises efficiency and innovation, its reliance on pattern recognition often reproduces and amplifies existing inequalities, particularly those rooted in gender. AI systems trained on biased data risk replicating and deepening these disparities. The central argument is that confronting gender bias in AI is essential—not only to safeguard women’s rights but also to ensure that LAC can harness AI responsibly and inclusively, positioning the region to benefit equitably from technological change.
