👋 Welcome to the J4K Goalkeeper Community!
Hi Keepers and Parents As you probably know, goalkeeping is a VERY LONELY position for both keepers and parents. If you are a parent who has no idea how to help your child, let the leading goalkeeper coaching school since 1998 hold you and your child by the hand. We have helped hundreds of keepers go pro or gain USA scholarships. For example, Adam Davies, who plays for Wales and was in the 2022 World Cup, is an ex-J4K student. This is exactly why J4K created this community—so you never have to do this alone again. There is absolutely nothing like this on the planet! To get started, please take two minutes to complete these two steps: 1️⃣ Introduce Yourself Below: Tell us your name, what country you’re from, and share ONE thing you or your child is struggling with right now (handling, positioning, or confidence). 2️⃣ Claim Your Free Asset: I have unlocked The Free Goalkeeper Confidence Blueprint completely for free to eliminate match-day anxiety before your next game. IMPORTANT: Because there are children in the community, we have ZERO tolerance for spam, bullying, or indirect selling. Accounts breaking these rules are reported instantly and banned. Cognitive activation
Cognitive activation is the process of preparing the brain to perceive, process, and respond efficiently to information during performance. For goalkeepers, it is especially important because their role requires rapid decision-making, anticipation, and precise reactions under pressure. So how do we achieve this.. Ive found the difference it makes on matchdays is significant with younger GKs and older GKs who have had lengthened period of travel. I often incorporate cognitive activation into goalkeeper warm-ups using decision-making practices with multiple possible outcomes. For example, Reaction to colour call-cone exercises requiring rapid responses. Ball drills that combine visual scanning with catching or diving. Dual-task exercises (handling a ball while responding to verbal or visual cues). Visualization and mental rehearsal before training or matches. What sort of things do you do as players and coaches to get them or yourselves “switched on”?
Reading the play
With the ever developing game and need for the GK to become the 11th outfield player, there is a real need for us to be far more tactically aware from a young age. Its very common that youth goal keepers focus to much on their primary job, keeping the ball out the goal. But with the growing tactical need to play out from the back and have an understanding of the delay to create gaps principle. it can be very hard for young GKs to keep up. Especially if not the most confident with decision making. I've tried many techniques over time to educate players in tactical efficiency and playing styles but one that has proven effective time and time again is encouraging the kids to watch elite goalkeeper match clips around distribution and provide thoughts, with a no right or wrong principle. Ive found that this lets younger players problem solve and naturally learn through peer group discussion.
