Benefits of a Gym Partner
So when I first started working out, my friends brought me to the gym and showed me how to bench and use machines here and there. However, they all went together in big groups, but I wanted to see results, so I took advantage of the fact that my older brother and dad worked out. They brought me to the gym and showed me how to bench. I struggled to push the bar with a 10 on each side. My arms were shaking and my bar path was all over the place. My dad asked my brother to load on my weight to the bench, but my brother insisted it'd be too much, so we didn't up the weight.
I then worked out with them for quite some time. However, COVID happened and I had to work out alone after a couple of months of having a gym partner. I saw way faster progress than my friends. Why? Because I didn't screw around, I surrounded myself with people who were ahead of me, knew more than I did. Therefore, I was able to skyrocket my progress. Now, when COVID occurred and I had to work out alone in my basement, I used YouTube as my "gym partner." I watched the Hodge Twins every single day for motivation, Jeff Cavalier and Nippard for science-backed and practical advice, and Zyzz or David Laid or Jeff Seid for aesthetics and vibes.
After the pandemic loosened up, I would gym with so many different guys. But I can't lie, I worked out most with . I also worked out some more with my older brother and my younger brother , however, Pantelis and I consistently went together for ages.
The best thing is the Skinny/Fat combo in my opinion. Why? Because the skinny guy needs to eat more, but the fat guy needs to eat less. So when I trained with Pantelis, who at the time was 300 lbs, we would go over to his place after the gym, since it was close and eat food. I ate more than ever at his place just due to their Greek household always having food around, which I am very grateful for. We would then go for walks for quite literally hours upon hours every day.
Nothing crazy, just talk about our plans for the future, map it out, and make jokes. Straight vibes. It worked so well because I was used to being this active anyways, but I was now eating more due to him. But because he was not moving as much, since he was addicted to the video game rust, he burnt the fat off so fast.
I used as competition for benchpress a couple years ago and it helped a lot too. I went from 250 lb bench to 280 in the span of one month because I was so determined to compete! After gaining some excess body fat in that timeframe, and whilst my older brother was bulking with me during that time, we decided to cut. So during the summer we played pickleball together every day, broke our fast at 1 pm and started it back up at like 7 pm. Only eating 1-2 big ass burrito bowls in the middle of the day with double protein. We'd also work out together too.
I am telling you guys all of these stories for one reason primarily. Weight loss or gain is stupidly fun when you have a friend. That's what I am trying to bring to you guys via the internet! I brought a bunch of my previous and current gym bros together so we can all have fun and chitter chatter while we make stupidly insane gains.
Are some other guys in here that are honourable mentions who I either worked out with or trained in person!
Do you have a gym partner? If so, how have they helped you see results?
