What Are You Committed To?A resolution is an intention to do something, while a commitment is a dedication.
New Year’s Day is a time for reflection on the past year—a time to count your blessings, give thanks, and forge ahead with a resolution you can keep past two weeks.
At some point over the next few days, you will be asked:
What is your 2026 resolution?
Why don’t we ask instead: What is the commitment you are making for 2026?
What is the difference? Dictionary-wise, they’re about the same:
- Resolution, noun: “a firm decision to do or not to do something.
- Commitment, noun: “the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc.”
But what’s more interesting are the synonyms for each word:
- Resolution — intention · resolve · decision · intent · aim · plan · commitment · pledge · promise
- Commitment — dedication · devotion · allegiance · loyalty · faithfulness · fidelity
The difference?
A resolution is an intention to do something, while a commitment is a dedication. Intending seems soft. Committing is powerful.
So today, as you enjoy the football games, the celebration of another year, and a resolve to find the opportunities hidden in each day, ask yourself: What is your commitment to making ’26 your best year?
Forget the resolution. Instead—what are you committed to?
