🚨 LETS TALK ABOUT IT FOR A SECOND 🚨 Are We Training Skills… or Teaching the Game?
I Really Been thinking on this lately… It’s easy to run a workout that looks good. Players getting reps, doing combos, working hard… everything clean. But when it’s time to actually play, that same player don’t always look the same. That’s what got me thinking — are we really teaching the game, or just drilling skills? Cause yeah, skill work important… but basketball really come down to: - Making the right read - Understanding spacing - Knowing when to attack vs slow it down - Being able to adjust in real time And those things don’t always get taught in basic drill work. I see players that can go crazy in workouts, but in games they hesitating, forcing things, or just not reading what’s in front of them. That’s not a skill issue… that’s a feel/understanding issue. So as coaches, I feel like we gotta start being more intentional: - Every drill should connect to a real game situation - Players should be forced to think, not just react off memory - Mistakes should be part of the teaching, not something we rush past Cause if they don’t understand why they doing something, it’s not gonna stick when pressure hits. I’m not saying stop skill work at all… just saying it gotta translate. I’m curious how y’all see it: - How much of your training is focused on decision-making vs just reps? - What do you do to make players more comfortable in real game situations? - Do you feel like a lot of training today is missing that “game feel” piece? Feel like this something we all can learn from each other on.
Thanks for all the advice so far!
