I’m Shamel, and I’m thrilled to join this community. I’m starting a YouTube channel called "It’s a We Problem", and I’m looking for advice and support as I begin my journey.
I'm approaching this channel from my perspective. I completed one of those random online life domain questionnaires and found that my quality of life is very low. I have all the classics like a traumatic childhood, depression, and fixed mindset, and I've lived most of my life in survival mode. I've already been on this journey with failures for a few years, and that's where I'm starting my YouTube channel... "Why haven't I changed my life yet?"
Even though, I've since seen it as a failure that I'm even asking myself this question, it's actually not (it's a sign of growth). And, in there lies my problem. When you see failure as a full stop, this negative black or white thing, it's hard to push past it and it's hard to see yourself.
I've become more self-aware, I've learned how to suffer less, I've empowered myself by realizing my accountability and therefore my ability to do better, and as long as I'm alive... As long as I have a now, I can always do better.
That's not failure!
People are suffering and feeling hopeless and powerless, especially with the political shifts. But they aren't as powerless as they think and I want to shine a light on their capacity to change and make their lives better even when facing systemic barriers.
It's a We Problem acknowledges that the struggles we face are shared by most, if not all people, and focuses on the importance and strength of community.
I really believe, as someone who spent years in deep depression swimming in suicidal thoughts that only recently stopped completely when I founded my mom group, it's feeling isolated in your struggles when you fall and stay in that sense of hopelessness and powerlessness.
I'm approaching self-improvement holistically via life domains.
While all life domains are interconnected, I’m starting with three key areas that I believe will be foundational to my growth and consistent progress.
Physical Domain:
Why Focus on Physical? I need to see tangible progress to stay motivated, and improving my physical health is something I can immediately feel and see. It’s where I can begin building confidence that will carry over into other areas of my life. If I can improve my health and energy, I’ll feel more empowered to tackle other challenges.
Emotional Domain:
Why Focus on Emotional? My biggest struggles here are self-limiting beliefs, anxiety, procrastination, and inconsistency. These mental blocks hold me back from achieving my goals, and if I can overcome these emotional barriers, I believe I can build the keystone habits that will make me more consistent and allow me to see progress in all areas of my life. Overcoming these will be critical to breaking the cycle of feeling like a failure and comparing myself to others.
Social (Civic) Domain:
Why Focus on Social? The political landscape, especially after the recent election, has highlighted a collective responsibility. While many people blame others for the results, I believe we all play a part in shaping the world around us. To survive and thrive in the next four years, there needs to be growth in our civic engagement. I want to contribute to positive social change and focus on how we, as individuals, can work together to make a difference.
Community as a Superpower
Community is key to overcoming isolation and pushing past the barriers we face. When we grow together, we amplify our impact. The struggles we share are not just individual battles—they’re collective challenges, and together, we have the power to overcome them. The community I'll build will be a space where we can support each other, celebrate victories, and move through challenges as a team.
At least that's the idea...this is long
