I had a realization today that honestly blew my mind.
Like so many kids in the 70s and 80s, I had my tonsils removed, and no one thought twice about it, it was “just what you did.”
But here’s the part I suddenly remembered.
I was four, left overnight in a hospital ward, sleeping in a crib because there were no regular beds available. 🥺
I remember gripping the bars. I remember the shot in my butt. I remember not understanding anything, just feeling alone, scared, confused.
And after the surgery, my parents said I talked differently. My throat hurt so much I couldn’t pronounce certain sounds, including the “L” in the word “cold.”
To this day, I still have to think about it before I say it, like my throat remembers the moment before I did.
And it got me wondering, how many of us had childhood surgeries that shaped the way our bodies learned to feel safe? How many of us tucked fear into the exact place where our voice lives?
Not because anything “traumatic” happened in the adult sense, but because, at four years old, having your throat operated on and sleeping alone in a strange place is absolutely overwhelming to a tiny nervous system. 😲
No wonder so many of us struggle with speaking our needs, or feeling confident in our voice, or saying the thing that actually matters.
And as entrepreneurs, we can fear asking for the sale, confidently talking about what we do, or setting boundaries with clients.
Our bodies remember what our minds filed away.
If you’ve ever felt like your voice is tight, hesitant, shaky, or you swallow things you wish you could say, there's nothing wrong with you. Your body is just holding an old story.
And now that you know, you can write a new one. 💖💃👑
