Barrett Fragrances is an American clone and inspiration house that concentrates mainly on recreating popular niche and designer fragrances at a much lower price. They offer everything from fresh Creed- and Louis Vuitton-style scents to darker Tom Ford, Parfums de Marly, Roja and Xerjoff-inspired fragrances. Most of their releases are sold as extrait de parfum, with the brand emphasizing high oil concentration, longevity and strong value. Let me start with the positives. Barrett has a very large selection, and they are not afraid to take on fragrances that other clone houses ignore. Along with the obvious popular fragrances, they clone discontinued releases, older classics, and some more unusual niche scents. They also make hybrids and twists, which I find more interesting than simply copying the original note for note. When Barrett gets one right, you can get a rich, powerful, and enjoyable fragrance for a fraction of what the original costs. Some of their fragrances capture the overall character of the original very well, especially once you get past the opening. The drydowns are often where Barrett does its best work. The fragrances can become smoother, fuller, and closer to the scent they are recreating after they have been on the skin for a while. Performance is usually one of Barrett’s stronger areas, but it can vary by fragrance. Many of them have very good longevity because of the heavy concentration. Projection and sillage are more inconsistent. Some push strongly, while others are dense and long-lasting but sit closer to the body than you might expect. A fragrance having a lot of oil does not automatically mean it will fill a room. That heavy concentration can also be one of Barrett’s biggest weaknesses. Some of their fragrances feel extremely oily on the skin. The atomizer may leave a visible sheen, and the fragrance can feel thick rather than airy. This can work well with amber, tobacco, vanilla, leather, and darker woody fragrances. It does not always work as well with citrus, aquatic, or fresh fragrances that should feel light, sparkling, and transparent. This oiliness is one of the most common complaints found in customer discussions, although other customers enjoy the density and strong longevity.
