Roja Parfums is one of the most recognizable luxury niche houses in the fragrance world. The presentation is extravagant, the note breakdowns are often massive, and many of the fragrances are designed to smell polished, expensive and immediately impressive. Roja Dove clearly understands traditional perfumery, especially classic masculine structures, citrus aromatics, chypres, ambers and rich oriental fragrances. At its best, Roja takes older fragrance styles and gives them a smoother, more luxurious modern finish. Fragrances such as Burlington 1819, Isola Blu, Oceania and Elysium show how well the house handles citrus and fresh aromatics. Burlington 1819 is bright, sparkling and slightly bitter with a beautiful grapefruit character. Isola Blu feels more elegant and Mediterranean, while Oceania gives you a cleaner and more approachable aquatic freshness. Elysium is probably the most recognizable fragrance from the house and remains one of the better examples of an upscale blue-style fragrance. The current collection still covers everything from fresh citrus fragrances such as Elysium to smoky ambers like Enigma, green fragrances like Apex and more traditional barbershop fragrances like Scandal. The darker side of Roja is equally strong. Enigma is warm, boozy, sweet and smoky, with that recognizable cognac-and-tobacco feeling. Amber Aoud is rich, dense and luxurious, while fragrances such as Diaghilev show the house operating in a much more classical, artistic direction. These are not simple crowd-pleasers. Many of them have a mature character and require some experience with older styles of perfumery to fully appreciate. One of Roja’s greatest strengths is blending. Even when the fragrances contain a huge number of notes, they usually smell composed rather than chaotic. The transitions are smooth, the citrus openings often feel natural and vibrant, and the heavier fragrances usually have excellent depth. Roja is also one of the few houses that can make a fragrance smell extremely refined while still giving it noticeable projection and presence.
