Outlands vs. Terra!

So I am absolutely in love with Outlands, my first (and probably only, ever) Amouage. I wore it multiple times the week I first got it and thought oh oh, I’m going to burn through this and it ain’t cheap. Rayhaan Terra has been getting a lot of hype as a good dupe, so I picked up a bottle to see if it could scratch the same itch and slow my burn of the real deal.

They are definitely a little different. Terra’s open is ever so slightly fresher and has an almost soapy feel to it, vs Outlands which busts out of the gate being more rich and earthy (and, dare I say, a little bit funky). The freshness stays with Terra through the mids, and Outlands keeps its richness but what I really notice is how much more linear Terra is. I kept noticing new subtle differences - oh, Outlands is kind of green earthy vs Terra. Oh no wait, now it’s rich spicy earthy. Oh no wait, is that vanilla coming out of Outlands? I think the biggest difference is in the drydown - Outlands takes longer to get there, and when it does, it stays there longer, and holy crap it’s a magical woody powdery vanillic amber delight. Terra’s drydown is very nice too but not magical in the same way.

The whole way through, Terra is very wearable and pleasant, and is a very complex well blended scent that captures the spirit of Outlands for sure. It definitely projects but isn’t nearly so beastly as Outlands; applying in the evening and the next morning I still smell Outlands on skin and absolutely on clothes but the Terra is faded.

So does it scratch the itch and will it help me slow my burn of Outlands? Sort of… it’s kind of like how I can do a pretty good job making my mom’s famous pasta sauce, but I only get 95% of the way there and it leaves me wanting the real deal. Will there be days I reach for Terra? Yes! And on those days I know I’ll be sparing my bottle of Outlands for another occasion. But I’ll know it’s missing that magic…

Now the next question is, do I do something crazy like layer on some Outlands *over* Terra to give it some magic? That would also help slow my Outlands burn. What do you guys think, do you ever layer on a dupe over the OG to spare your bottle?
