Gatekeeping
I honestly feel this is more parody than anything serious, but it does make me ask the question because enthusiast circles operate differently. In the cigar world, we share what we’re smoking. In the fragrance world, I enjoy sharing what I’m wearing — oils, solids, sprays, body scenting, environmental scenting, and even laundry. It’s part of who I am.
For me, sharing is paying it forward. I don’t get territorial over fragrances I talk about. If something I introduced ends up floating around at work or outside of it, that actually makes me happy. It means the conversations mattered. It means people listened, connected, and maybe found something that resonated with them personally.
That’s how friendships and little communities start forming. It’s no different than sitting in a cigar lounge where someone passes along a recommendation, another person tries it, and suddenly there’s conversation, camaraderie, and connection built around a shared passion.
But I know there is one fragrance most enjoy- it’s their signature. I don’t have one and glad I don’t. But for those who do, let’s discuss- do you gatekeep any of your fragrances and why?
