Ask Andrew Anything 🎥 (Replay + What We Covered)
First AMA is in the books. Small group this time, but honestly this is exactly how these get good, more real conversation, less noise. This format is open to everyone, so bring whatever you’re working through next time. WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT: - Screen replacements and why they’re harder than they look - Color grading struggles, especially getting consistent results - Plugins vs learning the tools inside Resolve - Building simple workflows and “recipes” for repeatable edits - The reality of learning creative tools, you don’t ever fully “arrive” - How production (what you shoot) affects what you can do in post - Growing on YouTube with simple, searchable videos BIG TAKEAWAY: Most of the struggle isn’t tools, it’s knowing what to do and having a repeatable way to do it. That’s what we’re building here. NEXT AMA: Bring your questions, editing, lighting, workflow, anything. If you can’t make it live, drop your question below and I’ll cover it on the call.

Thanks for the vod. ! Couldn't make it, nice seing you fine gentlemen have a cono. Andrew has his nice coffee Mokka color theme and dresses accordingly with a dash of orange. 🧐 My laptop cam has had black tape on it since its first use, I think it has fused with the lens now 😅. Is appearing as a one's pfp work (à la discord) ? Asking for an eventual futur AMA
🎬 April in Resolve School: Editing for Story Clarity
We are officially moving into a new rhythm here in Resolve School. While the name is still "Resolve School" for now, the vision is broadening. Most of you are here because you want to make better videos (specifically in Resolve), whether you’re a solo creator, editor, or someone working on projects for others. Software is a tool, but video craft is the career. This year, we are shifting the focus from just "how to use Resolve" to the entire process: storytelling, production (lighting, filming, editing), and workflow. To keep us focused, every month will now have a specific theme. ➡️ THE APRIL THEME: EDITING FOR STORY CLARITY ⬅️ It doesn't matter how good your color grade is if the viewer is confused. This month, we’re focusing on how to use the edit to make your message unmistakable. We’ll look at pacing, structure, and the "why" behind every cut. 🗓️ THE NEW MONTHLY RHYTHM Moving forward, we are establishing two core "live" beats every month to help you stay on track: - 2ND FRIDAY: ASK ANDREW ANYTHING (AMA) This is open to the entire community. It’s a live hangout where you can bring any questions; editing, gear, production, business, or workflow. It’s the place to get unstuck and talk shop. - 4TH FRIDAY: VIDEO CRITIQUE WORKSHOP (PREMIUM & VIP) This is where the real work happens. We will do deep-dive critiques of member-submitted footage and run workshops designed to sharpen your technical skills in Resolve, video production, and your overall creative eye. 👉 WHAT’S COMING THIS WEEK I am committing to releasing two core teaching videos every month for you: a Video Breakdown (analyzing why a video works) and a Skill Training (a practical "how-to" system). Tomorrow, I’ll be posting a specific thread about these videos. I want you involved in the process, so I’ll be explaining exactly how you can help shape the content and get your own questions answered in those videos. MY INTENTION FOR THIS COMMUNITY

Waking Life
I'm curious, first of all, if anybody else here has seen this movie. Came out in 2001, written and directed by Richard Linklater ("Slacker, "Dazed and Confused.) It's a deeply philosophical movie about dreams and reality. What made it work was that the entire movie is presented in rotoscoped animation, with each scene animated by a different artist using custom software by Bob Sabiston. It gives the movie a surreal, dream-like vibe. (Original trailer here.) I've loved it since I first saw it back in 2001. I hadn't watched it in many years (pre pandemic, I'm pretty sure), but have been watching it again over the past few days. I still really enjoy it. I'm bringing it up here because I'm curious: Could you today do exactly this style of animation entirely in Fusion?

Probably a bit of a learning curve, but I'd go for Blender to achieve this kind of effect. It has a pretty powerful 2D animation tool called "grease pencil" and has now a composition tool as well. It wouldn't be a filter solution, and most likely require some amount of keyframing work, but on the other hand you wouldn't get that uncanny valley effect that rotoscoping always gives. 5.1 just came out a few days ago, also it's free. Personally I've always found rotoscoping to be visually "meh" even when done by Ralph Bakshi or more recently in A Scanner Darkly,.. Totally subjective opinion on my part though.

@Benjamin Lanin If the uncanny valley is what you're actually leaning towards, I get it.. 😄 There's maybe another 2d animation software that might catch your fancy,.. "Krita" which is also open sourced and on linux. Also I believe way easier to get accustomed to than Blender. I don't know how easy it is to load live footage on a layer though. But I know it has an oignon skin system. And there's always the AI route with comfyUI and various open source models, haven't tested too much on the animation side (cuz old graphic card), but applying styles to images was really impressive when I dabbled with it a few months ago.
FRIDAY WINS 🎉
Let’s run it back. What did you actually get done this week? Not what you planned… what actually happened. Could be anything: - Finished a video - Learned something new in editing - Posted consistently - Took on a client project - Fixed something that’s been slowing you down - Even just sat down and did the work when you didn’t feel like it Small wins count. Honestly, those are usually the ones that matter most. If you’ve been stuck or this week didn’t go how you wanted, that’s fine too, just share one thing you did move forward. Drop your win below 👇 And if you want, share the video or project you worked on, I’ll jump in and take a look. Let’s stack some momentum going into next week.

📅 Mar 16th - MONDAY CHECK-IN 👋
Hey everyone, happy Monday. Just wanted to check in and say welcome to the new members who joined recently. Glad you're here. @Sikho Qangani @Jessa Stebbins @Fernando Nogueira @David Hubbard @Parker Humpherys @Mohammed Jaafar @Ariunbileg Alirz @James Rai @Sonia Ramsey If you're new here (or even if you're not), this community is basically a place for creators who want to get better at editing, learn DaVinci Resolve, and improve the videos they're making. A lot of the value here comes from people actually sharing what they’re working on and asking questions. So if you’ve been lurking for a bit, this is a good week to jump in. A few simple things you could post: • A video you’re currently editing • A timeline or workflow question • Something you’re stuck on in Resolve • A small win from a project you finished • A clip you want feedback on Even small posts usually lead to good conversations and learning. And if you’re brand new, feel free to introduce yourself and share: • What kind of videos you make • What you're currently trying to improve Looking forward to seeing what everyone’s working on this week. 👊

It's going to be a solid month before I really get to dive into Resolve, so nothing to show for now. But be ready for a deluge of noob questions when the time comes. 😁 Been through some of the setup and UI courses from the classroom tho, and it's gonna drastically reduce the guesswork when starting. So thanks for that already! Ps. couldn't find any gifs of Steve Martin's "I don't find this amusing Guererro" Bunny eared surgeon scene from "The Man with Two Brains". Such a shame.. could have been a nice companion to your gif 😑

@Andrew Farmer You should watch the full film, if you get a chance or haven't yet.. not the most subtle humour, still one of my favorites in that genre.
