OIls VS gouache
Dear Samuel Earp, I was wondering if you might be willing to share your thoughts on working in different mediums. Do you approach painting in oils any differently than you would in gouache, either in terms of technique, planning, or mindset? I’d really appreciate hearing your perspective. Best regards, Howard Lambert

I felt that the foreground should be as descriptive and sharper than the trees on the left on a plane further in the background but the foreground was blurry so I didn’t understand. Why It got more abstract the closer in.

@Johan Krijgsman It is a beautiful painting, just trying to understand.

@Loretta Esh the composition Is genius. Love the empty space below. The corn husks are beautiful and dance with restraint. The detail of the kernels is extraordinary. Congratulations!
New Free Guide - Mastering Tonal Values
Hey everyone, Merry Christmas I just wrapped up writing a new guide: Mastering Tonal Values: The Foundation of Professional Landscape Painting. It's something I wish I'd had when I was starting out: a clear explanation of why values matter more than colour, how to create depth using atmospheric perspective, and Carlson's 4-zone system for organising any landscape. Download it here - completely free: https://www.skool.com/painters-hub/classroom/e0acdf28?md=c64165c13595427c8f9515735383fd97 Read it, and let me know what you think in the comments. I hope it helps you with your paintings Happy painting Samuel

Pushing my expression by learning techniques
I’m so glad to be accepted into your amazing group. I see so many accomplished artist. I am searching for a realistic depiction of waves coming onto the sand. I call myself a surreal cartoonist. I put an idea on the canvas mindful of composition. I want to juxtapose the idea with a little realism in the background. This painting called “the net” has several dichotomies. We don’t know if the egrets are depositing the bounty on the shore or taking it away. We don’t know if the contents of the net are treasure or refuse.

@Ken Boyko thank you Ken. I’m just jumping back in to painting. A career change, so your words encourage me to work
Reflections
Another painting from memory. I spent my teenage years on Lake Erie and one morning the water was like a smooth pane of glass. After many sketches, this 16 x 20 oil on canvas is my attempt to capture that morning.

@Chuck Taylor your composition is exquisite. the triangles top and bottom, echoed back and front draw me in to the boat and the post breaks the bouncing like punctuation. Genuinely magical.
