Nice work, Ariana. I really like those spring greens in your painting.
Winter Light, No Snow Required 🎨
Hey Artists Just dropped a new YouTube video and thought you'd enjoy this one. I painted a winter landscape: straw-coloured grasses lit up by that beautiful low winter light, warm beiges, soft crimsons, bare poplar trees, all set against dark, brooding mountains in the background. No snow, but honestly, the light in this scene is everything. I walk through exactly how I captured it and kept those warm tones feeling luminous against the cool darks. Hope it gets you inspired to paint something this week! Happy painting Sam 😊 P.S. This painting was actually done live inside Sam's Art School β€” if you want to follow along with the full step-by-step version replay plus weekly live painting classes, come and join us over there. πŸ‘‰ https://www.skool.com/samuel-earp-online-art-school/about

Looking for advice.
I have never done any plein air painting and I plan on attending a plein air workshop at the end of May. Since I have two months to prepare, I am looking for any advice on how I should prepare to make this experience a success.

Hey Larry, so awesome that you're about to try plein air painting! I think you'll love it. There's nothing like getting outdoors in nature, painting from life, and just being outside in the sun or whatever the weather conditions. In order to prepare for plein air painting on the equipment side, I would get yourself a pochade box, something that you can easily set up outdoors. The cool thing about pochade boxes is you can use them in the studio as well. Obviously, make sure you've got your paints with you and: - brushes - paper towels - brush cleaning gear - rags - bag for rubbish Another thing I would advise you to do is wear a hat, like a baseball cap. This is not only for the sun, but mainly just I find that it's easier to paint with when you haven't got too much glare, so make sure you bring a hat. Also, it's worth bringing just in case wet weather gear as well, and depending on where you live in the world, suitable clothing for you, just in case it's cold. Certainly here in New Zealand, it can get quite chilly and the weather can change very quickly. Aside from bringing water with you and something to eat, because plein air painting can make you hungry, I think that's it. As I say, I think you'll really enjoy this plein air painting experience, and it's something that I love to do myself. I'm trying to get out once a week to go plein air painting. It will really help you with your painting skills and it will help you to see the landscape, seeing colours, seeing tonal values, seeing compositions.

@Larry Stickland hi Larry, The best Pochard boxes are made by a guy called Ben White at his site, which is called allaprimapochade.com. He hand makes them all. They are a little pricey but they are the best Pochard boxes out there. I literally have three of them. The model I would recommend, if you do decide to buy one, is the black foot, which is ideal for 8 by or paintings that are 8 by 10 inches. You can also do bigger paintings on it and the light models are cheaper. Actually if I was to buy another one from him again, I would get a β€œlite” model, a β€œLite” Pochard box. I hope that helps anyway.

This painting is beautiful, Georg. Really love the brushwork as well. It's really good that you've gotten back into painting after 15 years. Earlier on in my art career, I had some huge gaps in it, and then I took up painting again 17 years ago. I've been painting consistently ever since. Great that you've started painting again, and keep going with it.
