Watch How Adding Contrast Brings a Painting to Life
Hey Artists A couple of weeks back, I did a painting critique with Rob, a member of Sam's Art School, for one of our monthly painting challenges: a gorgeous snowy scene I photographed years ago and am actually painting myself right now. His work was solid, but when we looked at it together, something was missing. The painting felt a bit flat, like it wasn't quite singing. So we did a simple experiment: we increased the contrast. I grabbed his painting, marked it up in Procreate, and recorded a full walkthrough showing exactly what changed and why. It's about 17 minutes, and I think you'll find it really helpful to see the principle in action. We pushed the values, made the lights lighter, and the darks darker. And wow, the whole thing came to life. Suddenly, there was energy, depth, and that quality of light that makes you want to keep looking at it. Here's the thing: this isn't just about Rob's painting. This is one of the biggest breakthroughs you can have in your own work. Contrast and value range are absolute game-changers. They're often the difference between a painting that whispers and a painting that sings. Watch the video below and see what happened when Rob's painting found its light. 🎨 Happy painting Sam P.S.
